Aloha...Just had the 60k service and valve adjustment......I can now hear a tapping noise when the engine is warming up for a few minutes. It sounds like tappets....is this normal after an adjustment?.....there was never this sound before......any feedback appreciated.

After adjusting my valves, I heard a noisy lifter too. I waited the next day to re-adjust the valves and found all were perfect. I know that information is no help, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

Do you know of another Green-Black roof NSX?? Please email me if you do.

A certain amount of valve noise when set to recommended clearances is not uncommon. (note the careful phrasing). It is possible that they were previously set a bit tight because someone didn't like the sound. It is also possible that the job was done incorrectly this time, with some or all set too loose.

Does it sound like just one or a very few making most of the sound or many? Have you mentioned it yet to the tech? If not, without mentioning your concerns, try to ask him what he found when first checking them. Were they generally loose or tight? He is unlikely to say most were fine even if they were, and loose if the logical answer unless in fact someone had set them extra tight. Either way his answer may give more insight.

I used to have this little clicking from Valves.. then I went to do valve adjustment.. and the sound is still there and they said its normal..

Just curious, where in Maui are you taking your NSX to get serviced? Since there is no dealer there, I was just wondering were you go. Thanks.

Aren't there ferries from one island to another?

I wish. In fact, I wish they somehow could build connecting roads to each Island. That would be a fun trip in the NSX

But no, there are no official Ferries between the Islands aside from what gblue mentioned. People use their private boats at times, but otehr than that, you simply catch a plane. Its only about 30 minutes or less between all the Islands.

Next time I'm in Maui I might try and stay at your cottages. I used to go to Maui every year since the majority of my relative are from Kahului. I hanve't been back for a few years now though.

Interesting.

So if you live on Oahu and you want to buy a car from someone on the big island...?

Back to the tapping question...

My car makes quite a racket from the valvetrain at lower RPMs. My mechanic said it's because the lost motion assmeblies, which keep the vtec rocker arms from flapping around when not in vtec, have gotten sticky. He said it's fairly common, not harmful, and isn't worth the labor to replace the lost motion assemblies unless the noise really bothers you.

The way he tests this is to use some sort of voltage source (I don't remember what he said he uses) and manually activates VTEC with the car at idle. It makes the idle run like crap, but quiets up the valvetrain.
