Direct replacement. Only real difference in the two is the amber turn signal lense.

I apologize if I'm hijacking your thread but I thought my question is related.
Is there a difference between the 2002+ center piece of the tail light compared to the earlier ones other than the text "ACURA"? Brighter vs darker red? Is it possible to just buy the 2002+ left and right pieces and keep my existing center piece since its in great condition?

I would suggest changing everything out, especially if you have an older NSX. Your original center lens will be faded or scratched and definitely be a different shade red than your brand new left and right tail light. its only $200 more for a new one
Yes it's a straight swap, I'd also replace the gaskets.
BUT, if you have a EDM taillight set you'll lose your fog light (or need to modify the extra reversing light)
I recall it not being different but, like rjwong pointed out you should replace it as the centers are generally cracked and faded.

before i got the center I had the original acura logo center and it matched perfectly to the 02 sides. I went ahead and got the 02 center anyway but it did match.
but... it I am sure it depends on how the car has sat in the sunlight or garage kept maybe no fading etc.
