Tach gauge problem

hey all,

looking for some help to get my tach fixed. I bought the car this way, i pulled the cluster and found one of the small wires of the copper spool on the back of the tach was broken where it connected to the solder. i unwound it just enough to be able to have enough wire to reach the solder and had it resoldered. Now the gauge actually moves but not properly. When i turn the key on the tach raises to around 600rpm, then once i start it it jumps up to 2200rpm and just stays there, no matter what i rev it. then when i turn off the key it returns to 0.

Any ideas?

No one? I had found some threads discussing the wires coming off the solder but can't seem to find them, so i know someone has some knowledge about this

I had this issue with my speedometer years back and it is very frustrating. My coil wire broke loose as well. When you reassembled the gauge did you make sure all 3 screws were tight? They get voltage through the circuitry from contact with the screws. Also, I noticed when dealing with this that if you rub a screwdriver across the coil of the gauge, the needle should move with the resistance.
Just be very careful not to make the screws too tight or you will break loose the solder again which you might have already done. I'd recheck it.

Also, are they Oem gauges or white overlay gauges?

They are oem gauges. Yeah i made sure they were tight, but not too tight to break it again. I'm not understanding what you mean by the screwdriver thing? Do you think my problem could be that i had to unwind the broken wire one time around the coil to get it long enough to reach the broken joint?

I unwound mine just 1 time and did not have an issue. It could be the circuit board itself too. Maybe try pulling the gauge and cleaning all connections?

Hmm, well that's helpful to know it isn't that. The guy that re-soldered it, ran the wire around the outside of the two other posts, could that mess it up? here's two pics to show what i'm talking about

What should i clean the connections with, scotchbrite pad?tach.jpg IMG_0813.jpg IMG_0814.jpg

While the gauge is out, rub a screwdriver across the coil. The needle should move freely with the resistance in the two metals. Clean connections with a cotton swab and soapy water then allow to dry. Scotch brite could scratch off the metal from the board.
It looks as though the copper wire may be getting resistance from somewhere else in your wiring diagram. I'd suggest buying solder and a soldering gun from a hardware store, having another person to help, and trying it on a day when your in a happy mood. Then resolder. Good luck its a bitch.
