Aloha from Maui...Will runining straight pipes
(no muffler) harm the motor or set off the check engine light in a 91?

Mahalo for any info,,,,,,,

In a 1991 ODBI NSX it should not set of the ECL. IT will be louder and depending on your exhaust it could be WAY loud:).

thanks Larry...I meant straight pipes all the way to the back, no cats, with NO MUFFLER..it will be VERY LOUD.......there's one for sale in NSX parts from Taitec.........

Oops,

I thought you meant "test pipes" as in removal of the cats. It will be REALLY LOUD then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also not sure about how this may effect the A/F ratio, since you will remove most of the back pressure. What is the exhaust manifold situation with this car. Stock manifold or headers?

If headers you will have minimal back pressure and your A/F ratio may be off.

I hope someone who has done this will also comment.

I've run my motorcycle with a straight pipe before and my neighbors knew that I was coming home from about two blocks away. After two weeks of nasty looks from my neighbors, I replaced it with a tail pipe with a muffler. Other than noise, I had to re-jet the carburetor to richen the air fuel mixture. I don't know if the ECU can compensate for the low backpressure.

To answer your question, if the ECU cannot compensate the require specification, the check engine light should come on.
