Spoon to recreate NSX Type-R in LHD trim for U.S.

Honda's decision to only offer one Type-R model in the U.S. – the DC2 Integra – is still considered a crime among Hondaphiles. And of all the models that could have benefited from a serious performance injection later in life, the NSX was a prime candidate.

Thankfully, Spoon Sports, a long-time motorsport partner with Honda, will rectify the matter by converting left-hand-drive US-spec NSXs into NSX-Rs. The conversion involves a long list of modifications, including stiffer springs and shocks, larger anti-roll bars, forged 17-inch wheels, a shorter final-drive gear ratio, slotted brake rotors, flat underbody trays and a rear diffuser. Part of the NSX-R's appeal was a product of Honda's desire to keep weight in check, so in order to get as close to the JDM version's 2,800-pound curb weight, Spoon will replace the hood, rear spoiler and seats with carbon fiber pieces, fit a smaller battery, manually-adjustable mirrors, thinner rear window glass, lightweight carpets and will rip out all of the sound deadening material and replace the spare tire with a can of expanding goo.

Spoon hasn't released details on how much the conversion will cost or when it will begin taking orders, but if it has Honda's blessing on the project, expect to see the first few models on the road just ahead of the new NSX's launch in 2010.

Re: Spoon offering Type R conversions for USDM NSX

I was just about to post this. I'd love to finally see one. I wonder how much it's going to cost.

Re: Spoon offering Type R conversions for USDM NSX

I had the latest copy of the vtec sport magazine and there's a full page of Spoon Sport ad. It had a 3 R's in it and there's a nsx-R with Blk badge and type I sticker. Rumor is that Spoon is finally turning wrench on nsx, and planning to put a turbo in it...

Anyone heard about that?

Re: Spoon offering Type R conversions for USDM NSX

Good bet.... twice the cost of making an NSX -R clone yourself.
Yup, it's going to be terribly expensive. Even if they can get into the US, it'll still be "just an NSX-R", with a power rating that doesn't really match my wife's MDX. I suggest, after having gone through the exercise, that if you're willing to pay the price to build a really stout NSX-RR that can run with modern Ferraris, that there is a way forward...

In the next Vtec Club video.

Type One's blog had a section on an NSX engine overhaul back in April. Not sure if that was the same car they built or a customers car. They been involved in Honda's in general including the NSX since it came out.

Also, from Spoon's website.

Spoon-Fed NSX: Tuner Re-Creates NSX Type R for the U.S.
Date posted: 08-22-2008

TOKYO — Japanese tuner Spoon Sports plans to convert left-hand-drive U.S.-spec NSXs into fully loaded NSX-Rs for the American market.

The Honda specialist is going the whole nine yards with the conversion. Extra goodies on the R include a retuned suspension with harder springs, stiffer shocks and thicker sway bars, a carbon-fiber rear spoiler, slotted brake rotors, a remapped ECU and a shorter final-gear ratio. That means total output should come in at around 300 horsepower, which is a little bump from the stock 290 hp found on the 2005 model.

Weight will be significantly cut, thanks to forged 17-inch wheels, carbon-fiber Recaro seats, a smaller battery, manual mirrors, thinner rear glass and the removal of all sound deadening. This diet should put the curb weight at around 2,800 pounds, which is currently what the JDM-spec NSX-R weighs in at.

Edmun Laurea, the president of Opak Racing, one of Spoon's importers, says that this superior NSX is currently available for order, although the U.S. registration process is still being smoothed out. Pricing starts in the $60,000-$69,000 range plus shipping costs, and Spoon will install anything from a twin-turbo to a wide-body kit if American enthusiasts are still hungry for more.

Now if only we could get our hands on the Civic Type R. — Mike Lysaght, Correspondent

Re: NSX Type-R for the U.S.

looks exactly like the one from the faxtor x shootout. (expect missing the nsx -r gt bumpers and side scoop)

Spoon should sell the Type R as a package.

This would mean selling all of the components that make up a Type R package so that no one would need to submit a core and do an exchange program. Wouldn't it be super super expensive to ship out your engine?

Instead, offer the ability for everyone to purchase the Type R kit in NA1 and NA2 guise (perhaps provide financing options for people who need it) and then that exposes the program to a wide range of customers.

If I could convert my 02 Imola into a Type R Imola that would be amazing!

So wait.. let me get this. They are taking a used NSX in Japan...

Doing the R conversion and LHD and other stuff to it and offering it for sale here under 70k?

Where do I sign up?

I'd guess that is the conversion cost and you still need to purchase a donor car OR ship your car to them

regards, Paul

I spoke with Spoon President/CEO and the reports of them selling a rhd NSX-R to the US market are true.

In regards to the NSX-R being a revolutionary marvel of re-engineering, in my eyes an NSX can be turned into an NSX-R much easier than a base 3 series to an M3. Honda engineers have done an amazing job with the R with wind tunnel testing, track testing, adding slightly larger brakes and chassis braces as well as a special interrior with lighter rear glass and many more small modifications to shed weight. But they are relatively "bolt on" components that make a huge difference to the cars performance, but not necessarily to the extent of turning a base 3 series into the formidable M3, heck the NSX-R has the same motor as the NSX, while the M3 has a completely different motor. I don't see why a base nsx can't be componently equal to an nsxr, but for those hard core fanboys, nothing beats the real thing. But like the M3, their are components better than those that come on the nsxr. Spoon is one example of a tuning shop that prides building a car better than the R with their brake and suspension components on their own NSX-R. KW is another company shooting to eclipse NSX-R performance by designing a double adjustable damper better than that on the R. They are even taking a base NSX with their own V3s out to Nurburgring to beat the NSXRs time.

In my opinion, the nsxr is an amazing car that represents so much for not only the NSX community but for Honda as well. Why not order NSX-R parts or the whole car from such a famous and respectable tuner in Japan that actually works with Honda? -That's good enough for me.

Re: NSX Type-R for the U.S.

Sounds like you would ship your nsx to them and back at your own cost + the conversion cost. I wonder how much it would be to get the nsx shipped to them and back.

Re: NSX Type-R for the U.S.

Honda should offer it as an option in their refresh program. They would then get alot more people refreshing their nsx

Re: NSX Type-R for the U.S.

I have a feeling all these parts will be optional to purchase on your own via Opak Racing or any of their dealers once all this gets sorted out.

I hope at least.. I am used to having Spoon as an option on all my prior cars.

Re: NSX Type-R for the U.S.

What's funny is the last part as Ed can get you a brand new Civic Type R as well. Yes it's right hand drive and has no interior but hey it's a Civic Type R:biggrin:

Re: NSX Type-R for the U.S.

Looks very nice. Unfortunately, I think that they should have started this business a lot sooner than just now.

And for that price, a CTSC should be standard. A 2800 lbs car with a 350 RWHP engine would (again) be VERY serious competition for the likes of Audi R8, 911 GT3 and such.

I'm still waiting to get the final specs from Edmun but that price was originally including a Japanese NSX turned into either a NA1 or NA2 NSX-R plus shipping from Japan. That was feasible although we had questions as to how they were going to do it for that low of a price. Now this article saying that they're going to convert LHD NSXs into NSX-Rs and now that price is looking too high.

Hopefully they'll get this nailed down and do the smart thing which would be both full conversions for those that desire and also let people do individual conversion packages for those that already have done some of the process.

I would love to get the ECU and weight reduction , plus the tranny and diff stuff but don't want the NSX-R suspension. Plus they'll be offering other Spoon aftermarket performance stuff for the NSX that they were previously only selling in Japan. Basically they'll be picking up where Comptech left off.
