Somewhat scary experience today...

Meh, buying a used car is buying a used car. You do all your homework and in the end you are still buying a used car. If you want a warranty, buy a new car!

Well said.

Oh, brutal now it looks like Dave is callin ME out haha. ahhh shoulda sold my wonky kidney and just bought his car myself. Bah, life lessons.

LOL! Would have been fun to keep the car local and drive around the beaches to see Bio bawling his eyes out (kidding). You would have enjoyed the extra boost from the supercharger. I am sure despite the clutch issue, it is still an awesome ride for Shawn.

Don't give up looking yet, the right car is out there. Come join us at Est Fest and learn more on what to look for.

haha I think I'll be the one bawling my eyes out at that point!

As an update for posterity and anyone who reads this thread, I had another car inspected down in Arizona this time... owner insisted car was mint, great, blah blah blah aaaaand yet ANOTHER REPAINTED NSX. Also had numerous maintenance issues that point to it being cared for by a shop that does not know how to care for an NSX, let alone a performance car, properly. We're talking blown strut, improperly installed brake pads, badly leaking clutch slave cyl, etc. Arg does nobody keep up with maintenance on these things properly!?!

For others who may search on this car and wish to benefit from the PPI I paid for, VIN of the car is: JH4NA2163VT000032

Frustrated but much prefer paying for a PPI than two flights and a hotel. >:\

seems getting a mint shape nsx will be harder and harder to come by...but i guess if your willing to pay top dollar you'll be able to find that right nsx

Base on the price points you are looking at, these are the type of cars you will come across.
To find an nice NSX you have to pay to play.

My issue is not with the COST of the car nor with paying fairly for a car, but with the constant misrepresentation and/or sheer ignorance of most sellers I've talked with so far in this community as to the state their cars are actually in. Perhaps more of them need to turn wrenches on their own cars... I'm not sure why I keep running into this. If the car has been repainted, state so, and it won't be as big an issue. If the clutch slave/brake line/speakers/AC/whatever needs work, just state it up front! It's a roughly 15 year old car, nobody expects it to be showroom mint! Sellers need to stop claiming this!

It seems so far like it's genuinely ignorance on their part - perhaps the current NSX community at large is dominated by people with more money than actual knowledge of the nuances of these cars. Other enthusiast communities I've been a part of seemed to have owners who were a lot more in tune (pardon the pun) with the actual state of their cars. The trade off perhaps is Prime seems to have more useful comments and helpful members vs. young guys throwing hormonally charged epithets across an internet forum and being keyboard-heroes.

So far the only sellers with any real knowledge of these cars*from whom I have learned anything have been selling cars with either too kms for my taste, or cars that are 50k+. All of whom have been from Canada! Chris, Owen, Angus, etc - credit where it's due...

Hopefully this attempt at documenting my search will help someone else in their future search!

...the search goes ever on. As do my rants.

Chris, who's cars have you looked at in Canada?
what have your narrowed down your search to in terms of price/mileage/color?

Hi Zak, hope you're doing good. So far locally, looked at:

Black 94 in Guelph, unknown owner, was at a Toyota dealer. Car had been repainted front and rear, and had the ODO run back approx 40,000km when it was stolen and recovered in 1999.

Also looked at Chris' car, which is a great example but I'm still hmming and hawwing over for a couple of reasons - not the least of which is dealing with the person charged with selling that car. My initial conversation with them left me with an earful of half-truths and a very bad taste.

Talked with another dealer today outside the GTA with a very VERY low km 91 asking a mint for it, but oblivious to any of the potential issues with NSX's in general or a 91-92 in specific. Definitely did not inspire confidence in that car, nor would I want a car that had so few KMs on it it had been essentially neglected.

Looked at a few in the USA now, 2 in person, 2 I had PPI'd.

Nearly sniped Owen's car from him but he came to his senses before I could snag it

My budget is: $fair price for the car in question. :)
Mileage: I'd pay a premium for anything around or below 60k km, not going above 100k as I plan to enjoy this car far a looooooong time.
Prefer 93+ or not within snapring range.
Documented service history within reason
Colour I'm fairly indifferent towards, sebring would be my least favorite but any colour NSX is.... still an NSX. :)

I imagine a similar wishlist to anyone shopping currently.

I think it's about time for you to share the VIN for the vehicle reference in post #1. After all, transparency is key. If the seller hasn't shared this information yet, then you should for the best interest of potential future buyers.

Well, it wasn't that close, but you are right about coming to my senses.

I think you should give Acura Sherway another chance. I wouldn't be scared of the 103k km especially with the snap ring repair already done, and the fact it carries close to full service history from two very responsible local Primers, one of which you have been speaking with and he is one of the most anal guy I know here.

Call them this week and schedule your test drive!

There's nothing wrong with a snap ring car...I have one and there are no signs whatsoever of any issues. Just buy knowing this could be a future repair and if so - short gears!

Keep searching...NSX purchases take a while until you find that right one. I bought mine from a repuitable primer and its 40k miles with a CTSC. Perfect.

Exactly. Mine is in snap ring range...I don't think about it at all, and I drive my car hard on the track.

They have updated their FS thread from "Car has had the front repainted due to rock chips" to "Entire car has been repainted". The owner seemed to be caught genuinely unaware when I pointed it out to them, I don't think there's any need to call them out further as being dishonest based on seeing how they handled the news and how truly apologetic they were after the incident. It was a mistake due to lack of knowledge, not an attempt at falsifying the state of that particular car.

Others however... :/

Thanks very much all for the patience and constant nudging, I guess the snap-ring thing is more of an issue to someone less initiated like me. I know the cost of a post snap-ring failure fix, it's not the end of the world by any means, I'd just like to avoid it because that's a nice set of KWs. (or a really busted set of Motons!!)

I tend to be overly concerned and paranoid at times with my cars - moreso when I see just how poorly so many owners treat such a fantastic car. Boggles the mind...

The advice here though has been priceless!

Chris and Cdn NSXers:

Hi from your expat Torontonian here in Michigan! I put the word out to my MI NSX buddies as to what Chris is looking for and perhaps one of them will be able to help. For what it is worth, I think Chris should wait it out until he finds exactly what he wants and I suspect that if he finds the right car, even if it is north of his budget by a few thou, he will jump on it. Be patient Chris and bide your time. I got very lucky with my /94 which you will see and drive if you want next time I'm in Toronto. There's nothing to be lost by sitting on the sidelines for a bit and just monitoring what's out there. Eventually one of the reputable owners who is well known to other Primers (with a well maintained/fully sorted/no-stories/well loved car) will decide to move on to something else (whether a newer NSX or another make) and that is when you will wind up with what you are looking for. Hang in there.

Best,
Jeff

Not sure if you're joking... but that's the exact one that I had the PPI done on.

That car had:
- blown front struts
- improperly installed rear inboard brake pads resulting in uneven wear across the pad (need replacing)
- rear of car has been repainted for sure, front of car has likely been repainted as well as the paint had fisheyes all over it.
- minor but noticeable leaking around head seal
- clutch slave needs replacing

The list went on, but this was where I stopped the very helpful tech and thanked him for his time.

Thanks for looking out for me though man! Any other candidates you see let me know, but I'm still hunting like a madman!!

Uhhh...okay that's scary! How would I know what car you did a PPI on? You haven't disclosed that information. Wow okay onto the next one.

There you go another reason why sometimes lower priced NSX's aren't the be all end all.

Despite the rain, today was a great day.

Thanks to Owen, Chris, Jeff, and everybody who's shared info and advice in this thread, via PM or email, or over the phone. Was a bumpy and sometimes frustrating road, but today I got myself my NSX. The hunt took many months, and I've been waiting many years to get to a point where I could swing one of these in my garage. Still pretty giddy and delivery date can't come soon enough. I can't believe it's raining for the next week! Typical...

Now... onto the hunt for BBS LMs... :)

No freaking way????

Which one did you get? The one at Acura Sherway?

When are you picking it up? In time to make Est Fest this weekend we hope. Now you have no excuse to defer joining NSXCC (www.nsxclub.ca)!!

Congrats big guy!! You deserve it. We are all excited for you (especially Chris and Sean).

Yes yes sorry I forgot to say which one, I got Chris' old car! The one at sherway after sitting down with Steve ficko - great guy - and hashing it out. Owen I will be joining nsxcc as soon as I'm in front of a computer (not my phone).

Woohoo!
