I was reading Leo Laporte's 2003 Technology Almanac and found an excerpt regarding Soichiro Honda.
November 17:
Soichiro Honda was born in Iwata Gun, Japan, on this day in 1906. He began his career as an auto mechanic as a teenager, and opened his own repair shop at age 22. In the mid 1930s, the former racecar driver ventured into piston ring manufacturing. Soon after his company began building motorcycles. In 1963, Honda unveiled its first sports car and light truck. Soichiro Honda retired in 1973 and was appointed a "supreme advisor." He died August 5, 1991. Today the Honda empire includes car, motorcycle, and equipment manufacturing divisions, as well as the Acura automobile brand.
