I have stock 91 w 5 speed manual trans. In 2nd gear the shifter will move back and forth over 1/2 inch as accel is pressed or as I back off. This only happens in 2nd gear and just began to occur. Any thoughts on the cause?

Now go out to your garage and take your tranny out and send it to me...I will fix it promptly and send it back to ya:biggrin:

This would be a fine time to get 4.23 final drive and short gears!!

If it is a snap ring issue, it might be more cost-effective to buy a used 5-speed (there's one for $1350 OBO) or it would also be an excellent opportunity to upgrade to a 6-speed. ;)

In either case, you could sell your 5-speed to recoup some of the expense.

Get the six speed.

If it's the snap ring issue, you might be able to get away with just replacing the snap ring and the upper transmission case. See if you can have the car towed to a mechanic with a lot of NSX experience. PM Ponyboy about his local shop in Tulsa, or contact Goodson in Dallas if you have to go that far.

(If you are considering any gearing changes, this would be the time to do it, since the transmission will be opened up. Also have your mechanic check the hub selectors and synchros for wear, and replace any that need it. It takes 8-12 hours to open up the transmission, so as long as you are doing it now, do any other tranny work you've been thinking about.)

Yet another option...

We rebuild the transmissions and can install the short gears and/or 4.23 final drive.

take care,

Just to make sure OP is aware Chris, I'm reasonably sure that your referred link only applies to the upgrades services along with rebuild but does not include material cost of the case replacement which would be necessary due to his unfortunate circumstances.
I'm sure that as part of your program however there would little or no extra labour involved, just of material (upper case) only ?
(Don't want to put words in your mouth!)
The point is of course that while it is out & requires tranny to be rebuilt with new case, incremental cost to short gears may be a relatively good investment.

Thanks for the info. Yep -- my trans number is right in the range and I seem to have the symptoms dead on. Boy that is some bad news.

PM me your contact info and we'll find a way to get your car to Four Star in Tulsa. Frank will be able to diagnose the issue and get your car in running order. Plus, they'll save you a ton in labor.

If worse comes to worst, then you may really want look at the Science of Speed rebuild.

Come to think of it, I have a spare 4.23 final drive laying around somewhere. Just have to find it.
