Man sentenced for laundering game room money

A Clear Lake area man was sentenced to a year in federal prison today for conspiring to launder money from his six illegal game rooms.

Thanh V. "Tommy" Bui, 33, who operated gaming rooms in Galveston and Harris counties, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Keith Ellison. Bui was fined $114,000 and forfeited another $71,000 and two cars — an Acura NSX and a Mercedes S550.

Bui's clubs were the Lucky 777 on the Gulf Freeway, the Amusement Palace on FM 2004, the Bay Area on Friendswood Link, the O.C. on Long Point, the Coffee Shop on Scarsdale and the Hide-Away on 12th Street in Bacliff.

Prosecutor Ryan McConnell said the game rooms had machines known as "8-liners," some as many as 50 machines. Authorities were alerted to the "private clubs" because of robberies and other criminal cases there.

Bui pleaded guilty to conspiracy to launder funds of the illegal gaming operation. McConnell said Bui took profits from the gambling and dumped it into assets such as a shopping center, nice home and a Cadillac Escalade in family members' names.

He said Bui was the ringleader and made up to $1 million a year from the gambling.

Answering questions from the judge about his past, Bui he said his prior assault on his sister was because she lied to him and his mother about being at work. He said he showed a gun in his waistband to someone in his building because there had been break-ins.

"I'm sorry for the crime I committed. I'm a changed man," Bui told the judge.

Russell Wayne Achord Jr., 40, was also sentenced to probation today for working in one of Bui's game rooms.

"Tommy" might want to change the name of the Lucky 777.

He's probably still laughing:

"He said Bui was the ringleader and made up to $1 million a year from the gambling"

He lost $114K + $71K + 2 cars (maybe 70k) = $255k...

It's just like he paid taxes on the millions he made - maybe not even. Plus he gets an all expenses paid vacation away from the wife and kids...
