This guy deserves what's coming to him, goes by the name John Dao and is Vietnamese. Drives a 1997 BMW 328i sedan.

I met up with him last night in Milpitas Q-cup to sell a Eclipse AVN-5495 radio and he robbed me. He pretended to want to buy the radio, handed me a sealed envelope. Before I had time to open it, he LITERALLY RAN with the radio into his car and peeled out like in the movies!!!

His cell is 209-230-7283 (said he was from Merced)

Real name is John Dao and his cell is with Metro PCS, can anyone who work there help me find his real billing address?

I know I will never get my money back (chalk it to experience) but BE CAREFUL OUT THERE – Desperate times desperate people!

I did a lookup on his cell number and got this updated info:

Possible relatives:

Tony Dao
1441 San Simeon Ct.
Merced, CA 95348

Leanne Dao
1429 Santa Nella Ct.
Merced, CA 95348

Current neighbors:

Vincent A Streeter
44 W. 27th St.
Merced, CA

Annie M Brizendine
15 E. 21st St.
Merced, CA

Lesson learned for me as I will never let my guard down again. I guess I've done so many transactions on CL that I started to trust people and this guy basically got the best of me. Small price to pay to wake me up to reality and how dangerous it is out there.

Rick that really sucks :( Thank gosh you didn't get robbed at gunpoint or something.

I'm staying low this whole month as you already know what happen to me too.

Take care my friend. I hope you've notified the police in your location as well as the police in Merced. Something like this could have been much worse.

Good luck.

P.S. I would post this on a national board to get imput as to how to deal with this.

I live in Merced. I'm gonna go on a drive in a second. I won't interact. Just peek around. I could use some cigarettes anyways.

How'd you find his real name????

Approximate age? Car color? Tell me more about the car........ Not many folks around here have BMWs, even older ones.

Too bad it's fat tuesday, doubtful he'd be at home if he's drinking age. Then again, there's only ONE bar/club where asians hang out in this tiny town. I'm usually the only asian at any of the other bars around this area.

thanks buddy!

I'm curious if you find his car to snap a picture of his license plate....gosh I hate scammers like this. I used the internet to track his real name from his cell phone number.

Car: 1997 White 328i sedan with stock rims and amber inset taillights. Pretty stock older body style e36 bmw 4-door. No mods except a rotary cd player, no window tint, CA plates.

Guy is a short vietnamese guy, slicked back hair, about 5'4, 140 lbs roughly, vietnamese accent and smokes too.

thanks!

Vietnamese guys are rare around here. Any idea on age? Because I can poke around the college parking lot too.

I did my scan around:

They are all nice neighborhoods around the area.

1429 Santa Nella Appears to be vacant.

1441 San Simeon has a newish car in the front (not sure of brand but not the BMW), a big lifted truck and a work truck. Not the "typical" asian household in my area.

27th street. Also a nice older neighborhood. No BMW the area. Nothing in the alley way behind but the garages are located in the back off the alley.

21st street. Address points to a ghetto apartment complex. No BMW in sight. But the area around the complex is another older nice neighborhood on that side of the main road through town.

As a matter of fact, I saw one BMW all night. A similar era convertible 3 series but green. In this area, vietnamese people and BMWs have always been very scarce.

And I scanned the local asian hangout bar/club. Negative there too.

BTW, did he have a mustache?

This worked for another Primer on here recently. Did the place you met up at have security cameras? I'd check all the local businesses there to see if they do. It never hurts to ask.

Guys, I don't get it.
Wouldn't a simple report to the police eliminate all these guess work? The cop might not do anything but at least you would have done your part as a victim.

The OP may have done that. He hasn't said.

Because in our area, his case would be put on the bottom. They'd only pick this guy up if they happened to pull him over for a traffic violation or some other incident where the cop would run his name through the system.

Guys, sorry if I didn’t make it clear but I already made a full police report and gave them tons of evidence, etc.

I think for most police departments this type of case is very low priority so I’m trying to assist them best I can to speed things up if possible. I took the initiative to track down his address, real name, even fingerprints 

I’ve learned my lesson and really don’t expect any monetary compensation at this point but I would like to see him get caught.

Thanks
Rick

Wow.. This sucks. Glad that your safe. This is not cool at all. I always see the money before I give, esp when you know your 100% legitimate. There is a lot of crooked ass people out there like JOHN DAO that doesn't have a life. I am in the 209 area sometimes. I will definitely keep an eye out on a white bmw with a slick back viet dude.

So what was in the envelope?

Cops  So much for protecting and SERVING.
It may not be high on the priority list, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be easy for them to take care of if it's that glaring and you have cell numbers, name, address all that stuff. Christ, I wouldn't want them to do any real work for anyone in the community or anything. Especially when there are speeding tickets to write.

****UPDATE: Great news guys to start the Friday – I got word from another one of the victims, the SOB was arrested last night!!!*****

Apparently this thief is responsible for quite a few robberies over the past few months. I spoke to one victim all the way in Sacramento and who got his MacBook stolen when he invited the guy over to his house. The most recent victim got his Macbook stolen at gunpoint.

But this robber’s crime spree is NOW OVER! I think all of us CL users can rest a bit easier with one scumbag off the streets but this lesson has taught me an invaluable lesson for sure. Now I need to go see the local PD to see what kind of monetary damages I can get back.

Question: Any ideas what I can do to pursue this guy to get my stolen merchandise or monetary loss?

Thanks for the support guys!

Good deal! Hopefully this guy serves some time and learns a lesson, but probably won't.

Talk to the police, the prosecutor, and, if all else fails, the judge when he is tried. You want to ask that the judge order restitution for your stolen item. This should mean that his driver's license is lifted until all of the restitution is paid.

You can also file a civil suit in small calims court, but it is a pain to cleect on judgements.

Good luck

That's awesome the guy was caught probably by accident I'm sure. None the less...
Nobody deserves to get robbed and especially you. You were a really nice guy when I
Met you at wekfest in san fran. Any man that can wear that yellow sweater and look good
Does not deserve to be robbed! :)

Kinda on topic...I built my mom a 95 acura integra gsr a few years ago..painted it
Built a motor..whatever rims seats etc...like overhaulin' for my mom. Anyways last january
The car was stolen out her driveway. We live in a pretty small area...my mom call me crying
Someone stole my car! You got to be kidding me..I told her give me an hour.again
Small area. We call make the police report and the cop snickers and tells us good luck
Those cars get stolen and never seen again. We don't have a lot of auto theft up here.
I told the cop I'm gonna find out who took the car and get it back. Again he told me good luck
But we don't need vigilantes up here. Oooooh I was pissed. An hour after the car was
Found missing... I got a name and partial plate. Called some old friends that might have made
A mistake but wasn't them. Within 6 hours and numerous phone calls..I found him.
Yeah.. I wanted to deal with it like all the rest of you are thinking...trust me.. I thought
About it. So I did the right thing. I called the cop who said it couldn't be done...and told him
Hey...get over here I found the guy. He and a few more units show up. The knock on the
Door..drugs a couple felons and guns were in there. I grab my mom to go I'd some of the
Parts for the integra...she was crying again but got to watch the two of the 4 get arrested
And put in the back of the cop car. The next day I found the partial stripped shell..and a
Week later I got all of the parts back. I did there job for them. I lost a little
Respect that day for our local pd. Up here...that was a big case...we don't have shootings
Robberies etc. Lol then the cop asked me for my resources ...are you serious? I just
Handed you an open shut case in less than 8 hours...its nice to know I busted and took a
Crook off the streets. And you also saw how it could have gone. Life is a big pendulum
Push on the good side or the bad side...just remember it comes back ten fold

A couple rounds in the air with this thing would have frooze him dead in his tracks!! Never leave home without her
