reset tripmeter?

hey guys,

from time to time i am having terrible time resetting the trip odometer.. what is wrong with it?

i've heard that is common along nsx..?

any idea how do i fix it? any tip?

I never had any problems in my 92 NSX. The trip meter is simply a mechanical device and I bet there is some debrit or dust build up causing the metal springs to stick a bit. While I never had it happen in my my NSX like I mentioned, the mechanicals is the same as other early 90s Honda/Acuras that I have owned and have experienced the sticky trip meter on occation. In my case a simple cleaning and lubrication does the trick. I did have to take apart the cluster to do this though. I have taken apart an NSX cluster as well and it is the same basic design.

Hahaha, that's because I had it replaced when it went south a few years back. I was having an awful time resetting it, and finally one day, I pressed hard enough that the reset stick broke. Don't recommend going the route that I took, because the trip odometer is not available as a separate item. It comes as part of a set that also includes the speedo and circuit board, to the tune of $1000. In case you were wondering, the circuit board, speedo, and trip meter in your car is only a couple years old.

Later, another member in my area had the same problem, and we had a used one, so we opened it up and replaced it. The old one, after we studied it had nothing wrong. Just needed lubrication. After lubrication, it worked fine. Mine was unrepairable though, due to the broken stick, and as Steve says, it's on his porch now. :)

The problem manifests itself as a hard to reset trip odometer, then it gets worse to the point you can't reset it at all.

Same thing with my 92. Usually takes several hits--to reset, and the hits become hard enough to break the stick quite often. Do you really need to take the instrument cluster apart to lubricate?
 
I am having the same problem except that nothing happens when I push in the stick.. It is stuck on 441.6

Help please.
 
I had similar problems with my 94 Integra...I just pulled the cluster out, removed the plastic cover and shot a bit of compressed air around the reset button. That seemed to fix it. Might be worth a try. ;)
 
HaHa. It happened to my 1992 white NSX, Mike Niday's 1992 white NSX, and Ben Lin's 1992 white NSX. In fact, Ben's old broken gauge is sitting somewhere in my porch. Mine got stuck and I just could not bear with a malfunctioned part in my car. So I took out the gauge and sprayed the entire gauge with Pyoil silicon lubricant. This stuff is awesome and dries quickly without being oily or tacky. Do not use WD40 which does not dry. The gauge worked perfectly afterwards. The job took 2 hours and the satisfaction was better than sex. :D

I have the same problem on my '93. From the sounds of it, it's pretty common. It's funny I'm reading this post, because I just figured mine was the only one until now.
 
Hahahah, that should read ChrisK's 1992 white NSX now. :(

Yes, unfortunately, the cluster needs to come apart, unless you want to try Steve's method, which hadn't crossed my mind at the time.

because the trip odometer is not available as a separate item. It comes as part of a set that also includes the speedo and circuit board, to the tune of $1000.

With $1000, I would have just put a Stack in it... (well, if $1000 is not enough, I would just buy a set of the electronic gauges like those they use on the WRX sti... it will be cool.

I'm glad I got a spare cluster to use as parts just in case mine goes out again then:D

As for paying $1000, I'm pretty sure Ben meant those were the list price. I picked up my entire intact cluster for $200. With this, I used the gauges from teh spare to mount my White faced gauges so I didn't have to mount them on my original, and I can later use the trip meter or entire section for parts if/when I need to make a repair later in the future. With all the wrecked NSX out there, used clusters are not entirely difficult to come by.
 
$1000 is the list price. I got mine from Gunn Acura when Tracy was still the parts man to goto, for about $600 and change. Based on how long the original one worked before it went south, the one that's in there now should be good until at least the next decade. :D I passed on the option of getting a used one, because at the time, we didn't know it was simply a lubrication problem, and I didn't want a used one to go out after a year or two. I got some of the $$$ back when I sold the used circuit board and speedo, so it wasn't so bad.
