Remove the dash board, how hard is it?

If I am just changing the dash itself , do I need to remove the heater box? Disconnect the a/c and water connections under hood?

No, most remove the dash to get to the heater box itself. If you don't touch it, there's no need to disconnect. Have a look at the pics above.
 
Just a footnote, everyone has covered the procedures expertly.

When recharging the system after evacuation, using 134a recharge to approximately 10-15% less than the original fill level ( I don't remember what it is) then check pressures. air temp. Most systems retrofilled work most efficiently with a bit less 134 in them. If everything is working well, yu can get a nice cold output again. Good luck.
 
R12 is 950 grams, so R134a should be at around 850 grams. However, with R134a it's not as cold as before but fine.
