red/black paint the top red?

Love them Both equally BUT, stock vs stock the red painted roof for me looks a lot less dated ..... then i have a BUT again, if you take a black roof, do like the example bellow, OMG .. IMHO that looks extremely HOOOTTT

car above is mine --as now-- on left, on the right, same car but I photoshopped what IMHO is the way to go if you happen to have the black roof, man, that IMHO is the way i'd do if my car came with the black coupe ...

In fact, i hope some day I can afford to get a beat up 91 dirt cheap and do that .. 02+ wheels in GM, 02 rear, type-R bits .. lower, spacers, and voila, CURRENT and HOT! -no bug eyes needed either lol-

Agree

A thread like this is a great way to make friends with 1/3rd the owners on this forum, and have another 1/3rd hate you -- no matter what decision you make.

ps. the other 1/3rd have Targa tops so they dont care about roof colour. :D hehe
No, the other 1/3 have black cars.

When I got mine, I really wanted to have the roof painted red to match, but my black roof has really grown on me and now I prefer NSX's that way. Gives it a much slimmer look overall.

One picture (by NSXprime member Jonathan) is worth a thousand words:

I've been struggling with this question for almost 18 years now................. Surprisingly, it has red paint under the black top.

Correct. When the NSX is painted, the entire car is done in the body color and then the roof black. I had a tiny deep chip on the top of my roof and could see red underneath the black. No concern here, just the normal painting process. It was clearly seen in the early production videos and detailed step by step in one of the NSX books (Development & History).

one day a camaro came beside me is red wit the black top !! the day after i went to a body shop and make my top painted red !! is so nice now ! go for it !

Man, I have to admit that does make you think. Camaros are just - a bunch of free loaders off the idea. It is really a pisser to have a Camaro with a black roof come up next to you and you know he just doesn't understand where the idea for his paint job came from. Oh well - I still like the picture of the jet in the background and believe that's the picture that is permanently stuck in my mind. Great shot!

I love my black top!

Can you photoshop a factory tail on that all red one please and the factory color wheels on the black top as you did on the all red one please. Everyone was has been. Big help thanks all for input

It's no secret that Honda was inspired by the shape of the F16 when coming up with the design, hence the black top, but I still think there is no right or wrong in this question rather a matter of personal preferance.

The roof line resembles a canopy, and the rear rises to an aerofoil; the profile is of a jet fighter's vertical stabilizer. That's no accident: In its search for the optimum silhouette of speed and purpose, Acura researched America's aeronautical designs, in particular General Dynamics' F-16 Fighting Falcon.

Totally agree - evidence is that I like both NSX -Rs in the video which I watched in full last nite. Question to the guy that found that Vtec Club film - it was cut off - is there another one that finishes the spot on the used NSXs??? I would love to watch the rest of that.

Thanks ya'll,

Oh- just read Big Ds entry - you are killing me.....damn! LOL....that's the worst dude!

I thought you would get a kick out of that. It took a while to find a pic of one. After looking at the photo of the Camaro I couldn't help but notice how the rear spoiler blends into the rear quarters and also that flagpole antenna...interesting similarities.

Yeah the similarities are trully sickening. Funny stuff. Did you watch the video here - or have you seen it before. Pretty cheesy but I really liked the dash in both cars too. Goes to show you those guys don't care that they have these REAL NSX Rs and mod the heck out of the interior dash - but it looks great and I may just do it.

Say D are you thinking about NSXPO this year?

For me, the question stopped when during NSX Fiesta 1998, I asked Uehara why did they stop painting the roofs black. His quick answer was "cost" and then I asked him which he preferred since I was thinking of painting my (94) roof red; he smiled and told me it would take away the very character of the car and the designers' intent. I never painted the 94's roof and my 97 is black.

Hey, linked video was great.... tbromely, sometimes you just have to dig a little. Not sure how to link the second part in a clickable box, but here ya go. The second part is listed in the you tube related videos if you maximize the screen for future reference. This is the direct link however.

Funny how so many people freak out about getting above 6k rpm and these guys are caning nsx-rs' like they are civics. Holding the same gear through the corner at 6:30 bouncing off the rev limiter the whole way, Luv it.

I like how the guy from kps engineering says to put in a lsd diff and final gears to get the biggest improvement out of the early cars. In the second part all 3 of those cars had six speeds dropped into them and DK almost matched his time from his personal R. Oh, the best part you are gonna dig; they are testing them in the rain, in the rain. Luv it!

Just to stay on topic, a little bit, my roof is still black. I thought about going matching color. Even sat in the garage and observed through 3 beers and many angles, the black just adds to the look of the car.

Many many thanks TyB, that's great - I don't know why I couldn't find it the other nite. I'm the worst surfer I think. Geez - I am so computer challenged and I was a CAD user back when I was in Architectural practice. I can use em but I am not a good surfer or trouble shooter.

Yeah, all the stuff about the gears got me thinking too. Now tell me something ya'll - what's the deal with the final gears- I've heard about the short gears that they were made with in Japan but I thought that was all of them??? So can you just go in and replace the final gears? What does that take - surely once you're in there as they say replacing the syncros with the updated ones would make sense - anyone care to chime in on what the difference is.

Now back on topic - I love my black roof and would never, ever think of painting it and am very glad that you mentioned your discussion Ty - that ought to set the record straight! Original intent - keep your stock what ever it is - actually some of you with same color roofs might consider painting yours black .....mmmmmm?

actually Tbromley, if you take the original context of what Uehara said was that the car came with a color matching roof but they had to "mod" it by adding a layer of black coat of paint on it. Just stirring the pot, now on the gears. If I can remember the wiki correctly, all the jdm and euro models have the shorter diff stock and that is the only difference. Only the R models have the whole gear set shortened.

Close but no cigar! Japanese cars came with the short gear set, but the tall final gears (4.06). Only the R modes came with the short gear set AND the R final gears (4.235). Euro, Canada Eh and US cars came with the taller gear sets and final gears(4.06).

To stir the pot further, only the R continued the black roof theme. Cost cutting, it appears, didn't include the R model.

Here was an interesting conversation in regards to the focus of NSX developement, not to mention the drift king Tsuchiya thrashing a R and a 430 on a super tight test track. You can feel how much more relaxed driving the R is, lower power but drivin to full potential. I laughed at how much sweat he worked up trying to tap the extra power of the 430, hard work for sure.

Thanks again Ty,

Now I guess my question really is can you replace the final gear without getting into the tranny? Will that make a large difference?

So otherwise let me get this straight - the roofs were painted the same color to save bucks - so it sounds like the comment by _tat is incorrect as it pertains to the "read in context" or what? Not sure I really understand that - since Ty actually talked to Uehara - right? So what's the stirring the pot thing - just whose right here anyway???? mmmmmmm:smile:

Haha, oh how I wished I could say I have met and talked to him in person. Tbrom, you might have skimmed a bit to fast. The paint process is quiet detailed, fascinating reading realy, but for our coupes especially it is all done at the same time.

Adding the black was done afterwards, hence an added step costing more money. The matching top was always there, just under the secondary black coating. We could actualy look down our noses at those matching color guys and gals as having the cheaper versions, nah. Haha.

What did you think of the Ferrari vs Honda discussion in the third video, I would have never looked at buying a Ferrari as a "gift" to help sponsor the racing team. In retrospec it makes sense for a "few" extra cents.

As far as the final gears go; ring and pinion, they kinda require you to pull the tranny. But, since you are there already for a few cents more you might as well drop in the O.S. Gikken LSD all at the same time. This morning while I was roasting coffee I was actually having a debate with myself about just this topic. I'm gonna start a thread later, it's been discussed before, but I'm interested in asking some more esoteric questions on the topic.

Well my context was not on price, but on originality. Since the cars were all originally painted one color, and than have the black painted over it. I would say the single color nsx is more original than the ones with the black roof. This of course is meant as a half joking half sarcastic tone that gets lost in typing =)

Ok, ok, esoteric, I like esoteric.....

So I read that too fast and I misinterpreted all this other stuff too.....geez... There is always that statement - "while you're in there"....you might as well .....oh boy and all I see are little dollars with wings on em.

I still like my black top and it is in surprizingly good condition - hope it stays that way. It is still very shinny. Gonna be nice down here this weekend and I'll have to wash her down and do a little waxing. Almost 70 degrees tomorrow and Sat. The rain moves back in on Sunday.....breaks over and back on our heads on Monday.
