I was just reading the latest Road and Track and they compare driving the NSX S-Zero in the game GT3 vs the real car. It is an interesting read, but the thing that caught my eye was when he was giving the specs. First he said it has 280 HP, but he said in brackets .. though I think this press model was pushing closer to 350HP..

Did honda ever give the press juiced up cars? 350 HP from the 3.2 V6 would be amazing.

Doubtful. The Japanese NSX's all are rated at 280 hp. The US versions are rated at 290 or so, so I can only assume that the NSX S-Zero produces *slightly* over the advertised 280hp.
The reason he thought it felt like 350hp is probabaly because of the shorter gearing of the 6spd, and the fact that the car is almost 200lbs lighter than an NSX-T.

Actually, I believe they are rated at 280 ps. This is approximately (but not exactly) equal to 280 hp.

The car that Car and Driver tested a few months ago on the 0-150-0 test seemed to be stronger than any other test I have seen on an NSX. I think any car manufacturer might go through the car and make sure everything is perfect before sending it out for testing. I don't think they would make any major mod's though. Also quite a few companies underrate their horsepower so that when the cars are shipped everyone will meet or exceed the horsepower numbers that they provided.

And a few companies who DON'T do that have gotten in trouble recently when their cars DIDN'T meet their horsepower ratings (notably Ford with its Mustang).

Ferrari has a history of over-rating their engines.

Toyota sent out a Supra press car with boost raised over stock then was busted and admitted it.

Chevy did this with the Z06... sort of. They actually underrated the HP, but overrated performance measurements. The marketing dept. said it ran 0-60 in 4 flat. It was in all the adds. This was back when I still owned a C5. EVERYONE on the vetteforums called them on this as even they knew it was BS. Did they learn their lesson? Apparently not.
I read an article recently where they stated that with the new boost in HP (385 to 405), it should hit 60 in under 4 seconds. DOH!

I remember that issue. The NSX did 0-60 in 4.5 seconds and 12.9 1/4. It also beat the vette to 150 MPH.

I thought they said they looked around for any mods, but didnt see any.

What is the point of overrating/underrating your engines in the states?? Doesn't make any sense to me.

As far as the mustangs.. I don't think ford was aware of the problem, but they have certainly fixed it. -- although they made 0 cobras until it was fixed.

Mazda also had that problem with the Miata recently.

Interesting that Ford fixed the problem by changing the car so it would get the advertised horsepower rating, but Mazda fixed the problem by changing the advertised hp rating (I think). Especially since Ford owns a good chunk of Mazda.
