Plasti-dip Questions and answers

One serious question for anyone who has done an entire car. Is there a build up of crud and left over paint in the seams of the body panels when your done? Or do you just peel it out of that area after it dries, and if so wouldn't it peel it off of the outside also? I just feel like painting 4 or more layers over a gap there would be some that gets through and it would have to end up somewhere.

Brian,

What (if anything) did you do to prep the coolant tank?

I just did mine last night and I woke up to see the plasti dip pull away from all the creases.

In the seams there is some "overspray" that gets through the body gaps. You can prevent this by doing a lot more taping and masking work.

Prior to spraying anything I use an alcohol bath to prep. It strips any oils, coolant etc. Peel it. Clean it up really well and respray. You can also use a good windex cleaner. Anything that will cut any lubricant build up on the surface.

Do you recommend doing an alcohol bath on an entire car if you are to spray the whole thing?

I was concerned about the alcohol stripping the wax or some of the clearcoat ( or any other layer of protection for that matter).

EDIT: It looks like an alcohol bath is recommended for the entire car. I imagine it is recommended to rewax the entire car if you decide to take off the plasti-dip.

I "re-dipped" it today.

I think it turned out ok, the finish on the front by the max and min is not quite uniform.

Yes, But not straight alcohol obviously. Wax is a must after you remove it yes.

What kind of alcohol? Is regular rubbing alcohol ok?

I would love to see what the Plasti-dip red looks like, especially on wheels.

if not, can anyone comment if the shade of red will be close to this?

Would look like that if you added several coats of the Glossifier. But yes, its a bright matte red.

Thanks Brian. I like it more than the chrome look. This plastidip is pretty addictive as I'm looking for other parts to convert to black :)

Very addictive. I am pondering switching my TL from Matte black to Matte white with White wheels right now.. Or Matte Blue. ugh to many options. I don't know :)

That actually leads me to the question...Have you stripped an entire car yet? If so, how long did it take?

white on white? don't do that...I think that's ugly color contrast in my opinion.

I would black wheels on white body.

By the way, what kind of towel do you use to clean the plastidip? I heard to avoid any lint/cloth towel...

Have you seen this one on the M3?

Not an entire car no. But panels yes. The thicker the coat the easier to remove. If you have 4-5 coats on a panel it comes off in one piece. If you have 2-3 coats it comes off in pieces.

I would not strip the car if I do it. I will go right over the matte black.

Yes, Saw it. Looks great. I'm a fan of the old school white / white look. Think Stormriders NSX. Beautiful.

As far as washing it I use what is called an Absorber. Used primarily for drying a wet car it is a rubber item that leave 0 things behind. We wash all of them with it and have no issues. Using something that is fiber/cloth will get chewed up a little and leave fibers in the dip. You do not have to dry the cars. Just take it for a drive and the water falls off of it. Then wipe windows and your good to go!

If you were to use the glossifier can every coat of this count for the 4-5 coat total?

Meaning if normally i'll be applying 5 coats to my wheels of red can I apply 3 of red and 2 of the glossifier or do I need to apply 5 coats of red and 5 coats of glossifier?

thanks for the info.

I washed the car last week and I didn't even touch the plastidip rim...looks good to me LOL. I just let it dry.

Since I need to dry the emblem section, I prefer to dry the surrounding/lights around it.

I usually use microfiber to dry the car. I'll have to get some of the absorber then.

Thanks again.
