Oil Surge

We had oil surge at the top of the engine at the weekend, resulting in an engine fire.

Has anyone experienced this? Of course, surge in the sump is fairly typical of any road car taken to the track... but at the top of engine seems far more serious.

Is this documented in the NSX and are there any solutions?

wow I have never heard of this in the nsx.Maybe LarryB or Shad ect could chime in.I've had the more usual failures ie spun bearing and valve float with broken valves due to springs failing(this was on a topend rebuild with hotter cams and aftermarket springs).

Yeah, i was surprised it happened. Hopefully the engine builder might be able to shed light.. but it would good to know if anything like this has happened before. The engine is essentially stock and has only done a few races following a rebuild.

Sorry, that sucks. I haven't heard of that before. I suspect something else....

My requirement before putting on the full rear undertray was to have halon dumping back there.

When you say oil surge, and refer to the top of the engine, do you mean that oil escaped from the valve cover seals or the hose came off the breather port?

We make a breather box which allows crankcase pressure to be more easily evacuated and trapped.

However, even on our built engine, we have not seen any measurable amount of oil collected in the box.

Is there a chance that you have piston or piston ring damage? This could cause excess crankcase pressure, which could cause all sorts of excess crank case pressure, which will push oil anywhere it wants to escape to.

Just some food for thought since you mentioned a fresh rebuild.
