I need some quick help. I signed up to take a drivers course through the Rocky Mountain BMW club for this weekend. After acceptance initially, I then received a telephone from their safety steward saying my car was disqualified since it has a targa roof. The targa was to be left in throughout the event anyway but he stated that didn't matter. Then, out of the blue, I got a call a couple of days later from another BMW club member who is trying to help me get re-instated. Does anybody know of any documents that pertain to the structural integrity of a targa car if I roll it?

This thread goes with the pics below.

Targa's are in the more vague area between convertibles and coupes and I know that different chapters have different rules around their participation.

Some of the Elise guys are running into the same issue in certain chapters.

All of the BMW CCA chapters in the northeast allow my Targa to participate.
NJ Chapter , Patroon, NY Chapter, Conn. Valley Chapter, Boston Chapter
Delaware Valley Chapter. The only problem BMWCCA has with the NSX is that its faster than the M3's.:)

I also have never been dq'd for having a targa,as long as it stays in place.

Guess I'll be the first one the offer this cheap shot (and realize I am not contributing to this thread one bit). What's worse, an NSX-T or a C6 with a potential road hazard?

That depends on whether or not the hazard being evaluated is the chances of a crash due to the driver's gold chain getting caught in his toupee. :D

Ahhhh now I get it!Thanks for the redirection Stephen!

I have a Targa and I have driven with Porsche and BMW clubs and have never had a problem. I have done about 12-15 DE events and no one has ever given me a problem. I have to leave the targa top on throughtout the event is the only stipulation.

I've never once heard of a NSX targa being excluded with any club track day, and I'm a member of them all since they all make you sign up and pay there membership fees- BMWCCA, BMWACA, Alfa, Audi, Lotus, IRDC, etc..

Many Porsche, Vettes, etc... with targas run regularly sometimes even with the top off.

Locally up my way, open top convertibles like the S2000 may soon be required with BMW to have a roll bar, that has been tossed around for awhile due to insurance requirements but hasn't stuck yet.

Not sure who their 'safety steward' is, but I would just discuss it directly with the track event organizer and/or track director.

I don't know about PCA, but policies with BMW CCA can vary depending on the chapter conducting the event. In the Midwest, most BMW CCA chapters do not allow open-top cars (911 Targa, NSX-T, convertibles, etc), some chapters not at all, others not unless it has a full roll cage.

Could well be very discretionary by chapter. We have a different BMW chapter for PIR, SIR, and of course once you get down to Northern CA tracks it is another BMW club entirely to sign up for. They all seem to have different regs on passengers, etc... so it is entirely plausable.

I can understand more the open-top convertible issue BMW raises on the 3 and 5 series with the higher center of gravity. However, for Targa top 911's and NSX-T's it would seem to be over board with the tops in place. Most of the roll overs will likely be accompanied by some sort of off-track excursion as well, so I would make sense to set it up more per track then per club organizer anyway if there is a compelling reason.

I did a search not long ago on crash tests for the NSX. Its appears that there has never been any crash tests done on the NSX. I checked the National Highway Traffic Safety Admin. NHTSA, and DOT. no data available.
