I just received the May 2003 issue of Maxim Magazine.
One of the articles is labeled "Mean Machines", which features their picks of Supercars. They race the Ferrari 575M Maranello, the Dodge Viper SRT-10, the Lamborghini Murcielago, the Porsche 911 GT2, and our beloved NSX.
Sam Hornish Jr., of IRL fame, test drove the cars, and had this to say about the NSX...
"The brakes seem to fade a little, but he car really handles well, it'll do just about anything you ask it to do. If it steps out in a corner a bit, you can bring it right back. The rear-end handling is a little better than the Porsche's, but the GT2 has bigger brakes and more power."
It's great to hear that he believes the NSX handles better than the GT2. That's quite a compliment, considering all the accolades the GT2 has received in its handling characteristics in all the magazines.
Other comments:
"We say: Credited with embarrassing Ferrari into improving its build quality, NSX is the only reasonably priced blingin' exotic that doesn't sacrifice comfort and reliability for performance's sake. All-aluminum body and chassis- 40 percent lighter than steel and just as stiff- and midengine layout emphasize agility over acceleration. New suspension featuring stiffer springs, bigger (17-inch) tires, and a stronger rear stabilizer bar kept the 2003 Acura competitive in the cornering department, but the torque-impoverished engine (224 ft-lbs at 5,500 rpm) kept this by-product of Honda's F1 program at the back of the track. Inside, the quiet cabin is outfitted with a four speaker-stereo system and easy-to-read gauges, and a removable roof panel makes high-speed car-to-car jumps a breeze."
"Drawbacks: Although this 12-year-old Japanese beauty's still got plenty of sex appeal and muscle, it's high time for a redesign and an engine that can bench another 100 bhp."
"Expert: I've parked a few of these babies, and the only thing I don't like is that the interior is similar to the Honda Civic's, which isn't cool when you're paying $90k. --Dave Cameron, parking valet, Gladstone's Malibu restaurant"
Caption: "It'll never break down, but ownership benefits include 24-hour roadside assistance and concierge service."
Regards,
J.
