I just received the May 2003 issue of Maxim Magazine.
One of the articles is labeled "Mean Machines", which features their picks of Supercars. They race the Ferrari 575M Maranello, the Dodge Viper SRT-10, the Lamborghini Murcielago, the Porsche 911 GT2, and our beloved NSX.
Sam Hornish Jr., of IRL fame, test drove the cars, and had this to say about the NSX...
"The brakes seem to fade a little, but he car really handles well, it'll do just about anything you ask it to do. If it steps out in a corner a bit, you can bring it right back. The rear-end handling is a little better than the Porsche's, but the GT2 has bigger brakes and more power."
It's great to hear that he believes the NSX handles better than the GT2. That's quite a compliment, considering all the accolades the GT2 has received in its handling characteristics in all the magazines.
Other comments:
"We say: Credited with embarrassing Ferrari into improving its build quality, NSX is the only reasonably priced blingin' exotic that doesn't sacrifice comfort and reliability for performance's sake. All-aluminum body and chassis- 40 percent lighter than steel and just as stiff- and midengine layout emphasize agility over acceleration. New suspension featuring stiffer springs, bigger (17-inch) tires, and a stronger rear stabilizer bar kept the 2003 Acura competitive in the cornering department, but the torque-impoverished engine (224 ft-lbs at 5,500 rpm) kept this by-product of Honda's F1 program at the back of the track. Inside, the quiet cabin is outfitted with a four speaker-stereo system and easy-to-read gauges, and a removable roof panel makes high-speed car-to-car jumps a breeze."
"Drawbacks: Although this 12-year-old Japanese beauty's still got plenty of sex appeal and muscle, it's high time for a redesign and an engine that can bench another 100 bhp."
"Expert: I've parked a few of these babies, and the only thing I don't like is that the interior is similar to the Honda Civic's, which isn't cool when you're paying $90k. --Dave Cameron, parking valet, Gladstone's Malibu restaurant"
Caption: "It'll never break down, but ownership benefits include 24-hour roadside assistance and concierge service."

Regards,
J.

I received my copy yesterday. Nice to know the 12 year old design of the NSX is still being compared to the newer exotics. I was surprised by the GT2 reference.

Actually, If you look at all of them as far as best bang for the buck, the NSX looks pretty good, except the Viper anyway. With MSRP ranging from $180k-$280K for the others (except Viper), the $89k price doesn't look bad. Plus we know you won't really pay that much.

Was the photo layout nice? What color NSX did they use? I'll prob pick this one up although the wife will give me grief over it! "Really honey, I bought it for the cars!" ;)

Ooooooooooo! That's my car then... OK, I have to buy it :D

Maxim isn't really too bad. My fiance reads my magazines all the time. I'm sure her opinion of my subscription to it won't change when we get married. I'm imagine your wife will appreciate some of the articles as well. It may provide her some insight into the male persona.
I bet that she'll believe your comment, since she's aware of your automobile fanaticism :-)
They used a blue NSX, with the picture taken from the front left angle. You can see the gold calipers sitting just within the great looking wheels.

My daily drive is a Honda Civic and the interior is nothing like my NSX, well, except for the fact that they both have a steering wheel, seats, stick shift, ..............

See Lud, I was reading about the NSX not...

I'll second that BLING in "blingin' exotic". Fa shizzle nizzle.

Dave Cameron, a valet parker in a restaurant, as an "expert?"

I don't f'n think so!
His credibility is flushed down the drain.
Parking cars for a living doesn't make you a freakin' expert.

C'mon, this is Maxim your referring to. The term "expert" is obviously dripping with comical sarcasm. As for the article I'm amazed at how well they felt about the new car. Not to be negetive, but the big H really needs to either drop a new car on us or decidedly say it has no plans to rerelease an NSX. But a little birdie told me something the other day...;)

Just as stiff ?? I wonder if the NSX-chassis would not prove to be stiffer than most cars, even the modern ones, if specifically tested in that respect.
The NSX always feels solid as a brick when I am driving over uneven roads, never a squak or rattle anywhere.

if i were a reader, two things would sell this car to me:

blingin' exotic!!!!! YEAH! Who's the daddy now!!! :D

"removable roof panel makes high-speed car-to-car jumps a breeze."

No wonder so many of you guys buy NSX-T's. You must be all secret agents as well. ;)

thanx nsxaholic & yawwn for posting this.

Have any of you guys been on California Speedway (track used in test)? How did your times compare with the Maxim times? They said its only 1.5 miles, but all the other cars in the test beat the NSX by 4 seconds or more. I expected the NSX would come in closer, about 2 seconds behind.

NSX 1:28.40
GT2 1:24.44
Murc 1:23.45
Viper 1:24.78
575 1:24.04

I thought the NSX should be closer also seeing as it ran faster than the 575 in TOP GEAR... though that was an NSX-R. Still, 4 seconds is HUGE! The course seems to have a long straight on it that the NSX gets crushed on. Once again, the lack of HP is killing our precious car. I think all of these cars do 0-100 in under 10 seconds and the NSX is closer to 13. That could be the time difference right there.
