Three-car accident claims woman's life, injures two

BILLERICA — One woman is dead and two other people seriously hurt following a three-car accident on Route 3 north. The accident closed Route 3 and bottled up traffic on Boston Road as cars were routed through Billerica center.

<SPACER height="8" width="8" type="block"></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>According to state police, the accident happened around 9 a.m. when the driver of a Dodge Caravan, heading south on Route 3, lost control and slammed through the median strip and hit a
2002 Acura NSX. The impact caused the driver of the Acura to lose control and hit a 2001 Honda Civic, they said..
The driver of the Acura died at the scene. The two other drivers were rushed to local hospitals for medical attention. The names of all involved are being withheld pending notification of the families.

State police refused to comment on published reports that the driver of the Caravan lost control while trying to avoid a flock of Canada geese.

Traffic on the south-bound side was slowed by rubberneckers taking in the carnage. The road reopened around noon.

Drivers were allowed to re-enter Route 3 north at exit 30 in Chelmsford.

Commander Jack Glavin who said numerous Billerica police officers helped divert travelers.
