No system is perfect, of course, and cars can indeed intervene in ways that are startling, but the nannies have gotten A LOT smarter in last 5-10 years. For example, in "Track Mode" most cars don't care about wheel spin unless your yaw rate exceeds a pretty lax limit. Power sliding around corners is no problem as long as you don't hang the tail out too far (for example).
