Audi set to unveil concept sports car to rival Porsche 911

By LUCA CIFERRI | Automotive News Europe

BOLOGNA, Italy - Audi will unveil a concept sports car intended to compete against the Porsche 911 at the Frankfurt auto show in September.

Audi Chairman Martin Winterkorn confirmed that the car will use an aluminum space frame derived from the one that Audi is building in Neckarsum, Germany, for the new Lamborghini Gallardo.

But the Audi won't use the Gallardo's new 5.0-liter V-10 engine. Within the Volkswagen group, "we have many choices of engines, from eight to 12 cylinders,'' Winterkorn said here at ceremonies marking the 40th anniversary of Lamborghini, which is owned by Audi AG.

The high-performance Audi coupe has been one of two priorities for Winterkorn since he was promoted in April 2002 to head the sporty-brand division of VW's Seat, Audi and Lamborghini brands.

"My priorities for the Audi brand are to enhance its sporty image with a crossover car and a sports car that is above our current TT but below the forthcoming small Lamborghini," Winterkorn said at the Geneva show in March.

These are niches that Audi of America Inc. wants to fill to compete better with BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the United States. With those additions and others, such as the entry-level Audi A3 next year, Audi wants to double its U.S. sales over the next six years. In 2002, Audi's U.S. sales were 85,726 .

The Gallardo, often referred to as the "baby Diablo," will be introduced this year.

At the Detroit auto show in January, Audi unveiled its vision for a crossover vehicle, called the Pikes Peak.

The concept, which is close to the production version, is due to arrive in 2005 at a worldwide volume of 30,000 a year.

Exciting news. It would be nice if Audi could revive some of it's racing history (from the 30s). But, I wonder what the weight of this new car will be. Judging by the current trends, I'd be surprised if it's within 300 lbs of the 911.

In the most recent Car & Driver, I read the Pikes Peak hits 60 in 4.7s and does a 13.7s/105 mph quarter-mile.

I believe this is the coming Audi RSR... I was chatting with some visiting Audi engineers at the Lambo Sant'Agata plant, and they were (at the time) investigating ways to leverage Audi technology in the Gallardo.

There is (was?) talk of using a detuned version of the Gallardo's V10. This should still put it well within P911 / NSX territory -- the base Gallardo is more in the Viper, P911/996TT or 360 Modena range. As mentioned above, Audi has a LOT of choices, being able to dip into a diverse range of both insourced and bespoke componentry... who knows? maybe we'll even see the old Vector come back.

Another article on this at AutoExpress, a UK rag...

As well as sharing its platform, the RSR will use the same 6.0-litre V10 as the baby Lambo. This hi-tech unit should offer at least 500bhp, and muster a staggering 500Nm of torque from low in the rev range, Audi is also expected to develop a new direct-injection FSI fuel system for the engine too, improving its efficiency and fuel economy.

The power will be channelled through a six-speed Tiptronic gearbox, complete with F1-style gearshift paddles mounted on the steering wheel. Like the Rose-meyer concept, all four wheels of the RSR will be driven thanks to Audi's quattro technology.

This traction will not only ensure extra security, but great acceleration too. Insiders are already suggesting that it will be capable of sprinting from 0-60mph in under five seconds, and that a supercar-humbling 0-100mph dash of less than 10 seconds will be possible. But the mighty pace is not just a result of the engine power and grip. The RSR will tip the sales at 1,450kg, which is little more than a well equipped A3.

Of course, the RSR won't come cheap, although in its class it promises good value for money. Initial reports suggest it could cost £80,000 – just under half what you would pay for a Porsche Carrera GT, and around one-third the cost of the £250,000 McLaren Mercedes SLR. Audi is set to bring the supercar to a whole new audience...

Doh! I'm impressed!

 I'm impressed! That thing still looks like a good 3800 lbs of solid Audi in the picture! :D At about 3200 lbs, my speculation was way off.
