Was wondering if the little vertical pieces behind the bumper come painted from the factory, or are they just the regular plastic finish? Cause I just bought a Black NSX, and the vertical things seem to be painted body color, so I suspect that the car had been painted over. I bought the car sight unseen. Any info would be great! Thanks.

Re: Need help from Paint / NSX Experts about repaint!

I too have a '91 Berlina Blk and those verticle things are NOT painted. No expert.. I am. But them there are the facts !

Re: Need help from Paint / NSX Experts about repaint!

i guess i'm going to have to give the owner a call. It was this car for sale

http://www.nsxprime.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33600

just got it today, but noticed that part of the car was painted.....what gives?

comfirmed with a couple people that the car was immaculate, but the paint just looks toooooo good to be a 13 year old car. Didn't match the interior, or the mileage which was only around 17,000, leather looks a little dried out...

Any comments? Just want to make sure I didn't get a messed up car.

Re: Need help from Paint / NSX Experts about repaint!

Always check the wear and tear on the clutch and brake pedals. :)

Re: Need help from Paint / NSX Experts about repaint!

From the picture it looks like you bought it from that "Motorsports" dealership up in New England. If its been driven for most of its 17k miles up in the North-East(Mass, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, etc.), then its a pretty sure bet the nose (at the least) was repainted. They sand the roads all winter long, so even in the middle of summer there are rocks flying everywhere when you drive. Its not a big deal, and as long is the paint matches good, then I wouldn't let it bother me that much. Its better than the sand-blasted look that most black car owners get upset about.

If on the other hand the car has any signs of odometer fraud, then that does need to be looked into.

Re: Need help from Paint / NSX Experts about repaint!

how would I know if there has been any odomoeter fraud? and, that pic was just used as an example, it's not the actual car. my car was from illinois

Re: Need help from Paint / NSX Experts about repaint!

If it has been done right, then what does it matter. It is not odd for a 14 year old car should have the front nose repainted due to rock chips.

You bought the car from a restoration place, it would only make sense that they did everything possible to make to car look good. As long as there wasn't any major body damage, a repaint of the front end is no big deal.

Just for my curiosity, why didn't you take a look at the car before you purchased it. I always do my due dilligence before making a big purchase.

Mine is white and they are not painted. As for the paint, the NSX seems to have much better/thicker paint than the newer cars. Mine is a 92 and the white paint is better than some of the 1 or 2 years old car. The black top didn't fare as well due to some bird poops...

Re: Need help from Paint / NSX Experts about repaint!

So that place is a restoration center? I figured that he personally owned the car, and a couple people told me they've seen the car in person and that it was pristine, so I took their word for it.

OK, I can't sit here and listen to this discussion like this about that car - this is crazy! :(

1. this car belonged to one of the most honest and upstanding people I know, many of you know him as well as this car. He is our Midwest NSX Rep.
Any of the 40 people at the Midwest NSX Spring Fling can attest to the car's condition.

2. *****yes****** it was his personal car. He does not own the shop, nor did this car have anything to do with his work.

3. that car was treated like his baby. Every car he owns is in that condition.

4. NO way would he ever do any of the accusations (mileage rollback, etc) that were mentioned in this thread.

5. the car is as pristene as they get!

You have an awesome car, that is arguably the nicest 1991 NSX left out there anywhere. Most poeple on this forum would kill to trade their pride and joy for one in the condition of your car. If you try to be a detective you can make yourself feel like there has been some type of problem, it's like reading the Yahoo horoscopes and talking yourself into thinking they actaully pertain to you. The only way you are getting a nicer car is if you go buy a new one, in my opinion. Enjoy you car for what it is, AWESOME!

Re: Need help from Paint / NSX Experts about repaint!

you may have an argument if he explicitly stated that there was no paint job anywhere.

however, if he was not the original owner, and if those vertical pieces are the only indication of a repaint, it is possible that he was unaware of the paintjob himself.

I am familiar with this car and its owner.

Everything AaronR says is true. The claims being made here are simply untrue (and some of them are outrageous).

Anyone who is familiar with the NSX (and I consider myself to be, although I'm not Jesus) knows that the NSX has a paint job from the factory that is almost impossible to duplicate in a repaint. This car has original factory paint. All 28 steps. Period.

Edmo7 said:

That's because the owner is fanatical about his cars. Not only does he work (selling cars) at a shop which is a combination of a body shop, detailing shop, high-end used car dealer, and storage facility, but he formerly had his own detailing business.

You got one of the best early NSXs in existence. Too bad you don't believe that.

Re: Need help from Paint / NSX Experts about repaint!

I agree with Aaron and Ken, be happy with what you have and don't be so paranoid. You got an awesome car, so enjoy it. :)

Re: Need help from Paint / NSX Experts about repaint!

Thanks for the response guys. I'm not trying to accuse Steve of selling me a restored car. I'm just voicing my suspicions, as I have owned 2 NSX's in the past, which were in prisitine condition inside and out.

One of the main reasons I'm saying these things is because the condition of the interior just does not look like a 17,000 mile car. If in fact the owner was so fanatical about this car, why did he neglect to take care of the interior as much as he did the exterior?

The second reason is that the paint in the door sills are more dull than the paint on the outside. I have 3 other cars, and the paint on the door sills are always shinier than the paint on the outside, as they do not get exposed to the sun as much.

A third reason is the seams on both doors don't sit flush with the Body, they're indented inwards a little bit.

When I asked Steve if the front bumper was repainted, he replied with "I supposed it could have been". How can a person that was that meticulous and takes such great care of the car not know if the front bumper has been repainted or not? I just don't get it.

Again, I'm not accusing or trying to bad mouth Steve here. I know that he's the 3rd owner and is unaware of what the previous owners had done to the car. It's just that I'm buying this car to keep forever, so it's EXTREMELY annoying to have all these doubts about the car. But I appreciate a few of you guys vouching for the cleanliness of Steve's car, it makes me feel a little better about it. But I still have my suspicions.

Anyways, I know that it's a 13 year old car, and used, so I shouldn't be that picky. But I was trying to find a keeper, and from what Steve told me about the car before my purchase, I thought it would be...

Man, I almost gave it to my friend yesterday for $32K, a $6,300 loss with shipping included, and went to buy a new 2004 model sitting at the dealership. That's how frustrated I am with this car.

Here's the Carfax for you guys to look at. From 1991 to 2000, for some reason there is no mileage reported.

That's an honest answer. Steve is not the original owner of the car so if he said "no way" he would be speaking about something that "could" have happened without his knowledge before the car was his. However, Steve is also the first guy to take a paint guage to any car "I" want to buy so he can tell me if he thinks the paint is original or not. I know for a fact he does not buy any cars for himself that he thinks have had any paintwork.

My advice to you: It is not fair to keep an NSX in that shape and have anything less than 100% love for it. Do the community a favor and let someone else love that car if you won't. There are far too few examples in that condition to have someone own one and not appriciate what he or she has. **step off soapbox**

Sidenote: The opinions above are my own, not that of Steve or anyone else.

Re: Need help from Paint / NSX Experts about repaint!

If it makes you that unhappy, then you SHOULD probably sell the car and buy brand new if that will make you feel better. I am sure there are many out there that would purchase the car AND not at a $6300 loss as you stated. It's not the end of the world because many know the history behind this car and would be happy to take it off your hands. It's up to you.

There appears to be a perfectly reasonable explaination to this: It’s possible the exterior of the car has been so well maintained and detailed, the finish on the outside looks better than areas that may have not been detailed as often (even though they don’t see sun).

Edmo7 said:
Here's the Carfax for you guys to look at. From 1991 to 2000, for some reason there is no mileage reported.
That happens when a car doesn't change hands (no title changes), isn't in any accidents (no title changes or police reports), the owner doesn't move or, if female, get married (no title changes for change of name or address), and is located in an area that does not require emissions inspections. Thus there are no transactions that would be reported to Carfax.

If you run a Carfax on my 1991 NSX (and I have), the only mileage reports since 1991 are for Illinois EPA emissions tests. As you can see on the Illinois EPA website, emissions tests are only conducted in all of three counties and parts of seven others, out of 102 counties in the state. If I had lived in one of the other 92 counties in Illinois, there would be no mileage entries since 1991 on my NSX.

Based on the Carfax, it appears that the car was based in the St. Louis area from 1991 through 2000. Why don't you call the two dealers there, and ask them to look up the service history on that car's VIN? I bet one of them has some service history and can verify the accuracy of the odometer readings at those times. But if you do that, please let us know what the results were. After all, it's only fair that you report whether your suspicions turn out to be unfounded, right? Besides, this will provide documentation to the lucky person you will be selling your car to.

One of the main reasons I'm saying these things is because the condition of the interior just does not look like a 17,000 mile car.
It does to me. Perhaps you can post photos to show what you're referring to?

I just checked my NSX, and the paint on my door sills is duller than on the outside. I have owned it since new, and it has not been repainted in that area. It now has 55K miles on it. I can only guess that either (a) the factory doesn't pay as much attention to that area, and it doesn't get all 28 steps, as the exterior, or (b) as someone else suggested, the exterior gets more detailing than the interior (I can attest that I keep a nice coat of wax on the exterior at all times, and do not wax the door sills - in fact, I rarely even wash or wipe them. ).

Edmo7 said:

That's the way the '91-01 NSX is designed. The bottom of the doors don't sit flush with the rocker panel cover underneath or the panels to the side.

I think you should sell it to someone else who will appreciate what a great car this is. This car is worth more than that, and there are lots of guys looking for that perfect NSX. Let one of them enjoy it.
