Mobile Phones... suggestions?

Re: Nokia

I should mention, I didn't buy the Razr for "bells & whistles"... I'm not a fan of them either.

My requirements for a phone were the following:

Flipphone - so I don't have to mess with keypad-locks to avoid random pocket dials
No exposed antenna - I ripped off my last antenna in my pocket
Thin - cuz who wants a bulky phone.

Razr met these best. The bluetooth is a plus because it just sends pictures and custom ringtones to and from my bluetooth equipped Powerbook.

That's all i need. I've been without reception probably 3-4 times in an entire year jus because of being in the real boonies :p

I want to thank everyone for your posts & links... i've finished re-reading them all very careful today. I too am tempted by the RAZR. The fact that so many NSX owners recommend the RAZR is good enough for me. :D :D :D

But I'll have to wait until the stores reopen to check out how much a deal costs. RRP on it's own it's AUD$950.

I'll be keeping an open mind though, and also checking out the Sony Ericsson K750i and some others. Will keep you all posted on what I finally get so you can all upgrade... to the new matrix phone. :D :p

Hi

Check out the W900i too. It is the sountrack to your life they say :)

Same phone as the 750i, but more space and also 3g. And space is always good :)

The W800i is the same phone with not the "flip out " as the W900 has.

I do not believe you when you say you just want a basic phone.. :)

Regards

Neo,

AUD$950:eek: thought it will be less then that in Australia, over here its about AUD$650ish - last I checked(Black). Friends who travelled to Australia regularly told me mobile phones in Australia are cheaper than here:confused: I'm a bit confused

Soundtrack to life? Wow... guess I'll need to check that phone out too then. :D

And you're right... I want more than a basic phone. There are some other requirements that I didn't list. It must have mp3 dialtones as I've been wanting that for years (even before polyphonic dialtones became available i was telling people we NEED mp3 dialtones), and if i can customize the wallpaper I'd be very happy. Stay tuned for NSX wallpapers for your mobile. :)

did you cvhekc out samsung products?

I think they have a new lineup of very thin phones coming p or already out

I also know that Samsung is the second best selling brand mobile phone in the world, (Nokia #1)

acclimmatization.

Mike/Neo, the RAZR does take some time & effort to adapt to, intuistically. I was a longtime Nokia user, and recently Sony-Ericsson. However, once familiarity and comfort-zone is achieved w/ the RAZR, it becomes second-nature as well a treat everytime you text/call/message/etc.

Did I mention it's constructed of aluminum & other space-age alloys? Also, the Miami_Vice ring-tone is now widely available!

Nobody has mentioned the Blackberry. For a good reason, I guess. Verizon offered me a new one for $100 or I wouldn't have been interested. E-mail fantastic, Verizon service fantastic, Web capability very poor, the phone ok. I do like the fact there is no camera. The Blackberry phone that has user capability to load software in it, but there is no decent freeware out there. I don't know, maybe that is because RIM/Blackberry hasn't released the code to the public. Razr 3 will be my next phone. I just wish I could get it without the camera. 9 times out of 10 the cameras suck. So I wish they would just leave it off the phone. The camera would be fun if I were 15.

Re: Nokia

Yes generic tri band, The UK tag for the motorsport is £3250, all have sold out worldwide, production run of 997.

Are the Vertu phones generic GSM phones? What's the pricetag for the motorsport model?

Thanks.

I've had my RAZR for a year now. I hated it when I had Cingular. The first ones were buggy as hell. I went through 4 of them because they kept sending me new ones under warranty because the software was so bad.

I'm on my fourth, I unlocked it and went with a different service provider. I love it now. And on that note I just recently bought the data cable and downloaded some software and I've modded the hell out of it. Ringtones, new wallpapers and sounds and themes. I've also gone so far as to do some hex editing so my speakers are louder. Put some new software on it and freed up a whole bunch of memory as well as allowed it to take video instead of just play it. All in all its a great phone now and I love it.

Re: *think NSX*

I'm going to have to disagree with you on a few of your points even though I am an advocate of the RAZR.

1. The battery is among the worst i've experienced.
2. The camera sucks and its only .3MP not 1.3
3. And the speaker phone was useless as far as volume goes until I edited the
gain table code for the speaker gain.
4. The phone is no longer valuable...i've seen it for as little as $40 with contract and 100 without.

Okay now after I wrote that I saw that you were referring to the new TDMA version of the RAZR which is the RAZR v3C that is totally different from the GSM version which is simply the RAZR V3. I've got the GSM version.

Another tally for the RAZR V3 by Motorola...

Ya'll should know better by now!?! It's made of aluminum, and other rare metal-alloys (no, not titanium... no connecting rods!). Instead, a nickel-plated copper-alloy chemically-etched keypad!

There's now a newer metallic finish available (in addition to the machined-aluminum and anodized black)... Anodized grey/gun-metal! {V3c}

It's a solid value: long-lasting battery, GSM quadband, two TFT LCD screens, quality 1.3mp camera w/ 4x zoom, speaker-phone, blue-tooth, java/pop3/mms/gps/etc...

The *bonus*: it'll still be rather valuable after a few years of use on Ebay! (win-win w/ this mobile!)

Insightful 6-page review...
http://www.mobiledia.com/reviews/motorola/razr-v3c/page1.html

Much like the NSX, the RAZR V3 is not the best in anything... but it's excellent in everything!

What software did you use? I used P2Kcommander and busted the OS on my E398. Had it reflashed at the supplier shop under warranty. It takes a little time to get familiar with the phone but what I like about it is that is has camera with built in flash that is very bright (HID like) that you can use as a torch light, memory card, small mirror at the back, mp3, blue tooth, internet and many others that would cost double its price on other brand phone. Small phone with many function.

For flashing and flexing I use what is called RSD Lite. Hex editing I use P2K Tools. To add files and stuff like that you can use the ordinary motorola software that comes with the data cable or P2K Man. You can buy the data cable and motorola software off of Ebay for 7 bucks.

I went to the store today and checked out the RAZR. Very bling. :D I think I'll go with it since the other options I looked at were uninspiring.

This only leaves one more problem: what colour? Silver, Black or Pink. :D :D :D

Now this is where all the silver NSX owners say "silver", all the black NSX owners say "black", and the few imola orange owners say "respray". :D

thanx for all your help guys.

Another vote for RAZR, and i use Motorola Mobile PhoneTools for ringtones and whatnot.

I have a RAZR v3 and love it. It's very basic and easy to navigate... my only issue with it is the low speaker volume. Sometimes it's hard to hear the other person even with the volume at 7 (max)... or maybe I am just going deaf.

I vote for pink Trump style.

No nextel mentions? The $99 unlimited package works great for me, i can talk and get the same bill every month. I have the i860 and have been pleased. i've had most of their phones and even thou they finally have a bluetooth flip phone now i stayed a loyal customer.

That's one HOT phone!!! LOVE IT :D

This is the one I have:

nokia-8800-combo.jpg

Nokia 8800. I love it, great clear display with 256k colors, every function you need and the quality is great. Love the scratch-resistant glass, I have had the phone for like 5 months now and the screen hasn't got no scratch yet and is clear as the day I bought it :)

It's not a Vertu but it is very exclusive too.

Does get some attention from females too, they love this phone :)

Oh, I am in agreement w/ you! The Euro'spec V3 (V3x) and the V3c & V3i are much improved and more versatile than the original V3 in many of the applications. Knowing Neo/Mike is from a land far, far away... I suggested the V3 as it has a broad range of models now.

I never had problems w/ my battery longevity between charges... but then again, I haven't exactly tried to exhaust it through use; I'm rather concise/trite/laconic on the phone... When you initially got the phone, did you let the battery almost fully discharge prior to recharging it & continued that routine thereon? This is one of the best batteries I've actually had w/ my cel' phones over the years... even considering there are two TFT screens and I don't have any of the energy-saving settings applied.

From a manual:

Note: Lithium (Li-ion) batteries must be charged with a rapid battery charger. Note that a new lithium ion battery's full performance is only achieved after 2-3 complete charge and discharge cycles.

Speaker phone just helps when I'm driving and I want to leave a voice-mail or do a quick hi-n-bye... otherwise it's just a novel function indeed. Interesting what you mentioned re: volume, I'm gonna look into that... thanks!

Yea, the camera I haven't even used yet (in terms of mms/email/USB-transfer)... I did snap a few pics' for court when I got a parking ticket (I didn't get my 15minute grace period... )

Value... well that's relative. This isn't eggactly a 4-figure phone to begin w/. It's been about $150-$250 for the past year or so, and often service-carrier & vendor rebates make the phone free or peanuts. Yet, unlocked & w/o contractual obligation, a RAZR V3 w/ it's manual/charger/battery can be sold for literally what it had cost to begin w/ ($150-$250 depending on usage/condition/accessories)! If you've seen them go for less, those must've been some nice deals...!

Anywayz... ready for Sunday?!?

I can help you fix this if you are up to it. PM if you want help.

Re: *think NSX*

Don't you mean CDMA? TDMA is one of the older technologies...
You must have got a bad one, cause every razr owner I have known raves about what your complaining about, except for the camera quality. most say its "just ok". If you want valuable, try getting your hands on a DG GOLD edition... $3k on ebay. limited to 1k per continent.
