I have to buy a new mobile phone, so I thought I'd involve everyone here. :p

My old one was an old Nokia (dont know the model #), and I've been tempted to try something different -- maybe a Sony Ericson, Motorola, LG, anything. Some people have warned me against changing from Nokia, but they are Nokia-fanboys themselves.

All I need is something that makes and receives phone calls & SMS texting; it is a phone afterall. All the other camera/video/mp3/calander/gps/xray-vision/omelet making/etc functionality is kinda pointless even if it is cool.

Let the suggestions roll.... :D

How about that phone they use in the Matrix

I've had my Razr for about a year and still love it.

It's the biggest conversation piece I've ever had surprisingly. has to be the most famous cellphone ever.. other than the Zack Morris :D

if i worked in an area that was digital only, i'd get the treo from verizon/ palm. the internet on it works awesome! no missed PMs on Prime!!

what service do you have?

Go for Sony Ericsson  you will like it, very user friendly. I use Nokia for many years till I get headache then I bought a Motorola V3 n sold it within a month, after I get a Sony Ericsson n like it very much.

Get a Vertu !!

Back to basic phone with a little more.

I agree. All I buy are SE phones.

I just bought my son the "Blade" phone (Samsung MM-A900) for Spint network users. He likes it a lot

It is supposedly an improved verison of the Razor. Same thickness, not quite as wide & a better camera.

They are not easy to find here in Dallas.

Good Luck

I've got the Razr as well and, being a general mobile phone hater, have nothing but good things to say about it. Its compact and light so as not to be intrusive. Good reception, so far, and its has an awesome golf game on it.

IIRC, Motorola has a new version of the Razr coming out that will hold 1,000+/- songs.

Yes, bought the motor-sport edition for my birthday. A completely different view on phones now !! :)

Simon do you have a Vertu? I have looked at them before...a bit too cheap for me though

EDIT: I just remembered that it's the phone that Clarkson uses, so I can't in good conscience recommend it to anyone :)

another vote for the Razr V3 here, I've had mine about seven months now and totally love it.

It is true that nokia has a better menu system and address book however. It can be tricky to find certian things in the Motorola until you get all the shortcuts customized.

as you can see the built in camera pretty much sucks:

Surely the one in the photo is the Nokia banana phone ?? 8110 or something ??
The one you refer to came later.

Hi

Yes you are correct. In the first Matrix movie they used a Nokia 8110(i) which was modified with a spring release button.

The phone was already discontinued when the movie came and was replaced with a Nokia 7110 which also had a spring release, but with a bigger display and not as nice.

I have had a Nokia 8110(i) and it was a nice phone. The 7110 was not that nice. I now have a Nokia 6680 3G phone. Bulky but okey.

I would recommend Sony Ericsson W800 or K750i. Nice phones, with a good GUI. Not sure if they are called that over there though.

Regards

Great suggestions; except for the matrix phone... I already cop enough matrix/neo jokes as it is. :D

Wiqaas NSX-T - that's the kind of thing i want to hear: A nokia user converting to Sony. I know someone who owns a Sony Ericsson (not sure what model) so i'm going to meet up so i can play with his phone. lol.

Another tally for the RAZR V3 by Motorola...

Ya'll should know better by now!?! It's made of aluminum, and other rare metal-alloys (no, not titanium... no connecting rods!). Instead, a nickel-plated copper-alloy chemically-etched keypad!

There's now a newer metallic finish available (in addition to the machined-aluminum and anodized black)... Anodized grey/gun-metal! {V3c}

It's a solid value: long-lasting battery, GSM quadband, two TFT LCD screens, quality 1.3mp camera w/ 4x zoom, speaker-phone, blue-tooth, java/pop3/mms/gps/etc...

The *bonus*: it'll still be rather valuable after a few years of use on Ebay! (win-win w/ this mobile!)

Insightful 6-page review...

Much like the NSX, the RAZR V3 is not the best in anything... but it's excellent in everything!

that looks REALLY cool, but the one motorola phone i've played with really sucked. the gui may as well have been in chinese it was so difficult navigating around.

Well, if your going to get the newest thing and since so many people suggest the razr, Get the NEXT razr aka the SLVR also by motorolla, basically a bar phone thats small like the razr http://www.motorola.com/motoinfo/product/details/0,,86,00.html

what I personally would suggest would have to be the phone i have, the sony ericson S710A, http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=602 , the reason behind this being, it can play music, yes I know the razr can as well. but the razr has a very small storage capacity, this has the ability to use a memory stick. I believe they have some out with a better version of this phone since, but this is the one i have and the one that i know works.

My phone is titanium and carbon !!

Must admit xray-vision on a phone sounds tempting
 ... and so does omelet making
Razr V3 tried it and it is a good phone but if your a Nokia user before, you might take awhile to get use to it- imo not as 'user friendly' as a Nokia.
Try some of the Sony Ericsson's models. For me bluetooth is very handy to have- hands free, files transfers etc. video, camera don't really use them anyway, just makes the phone heavier but then again nearly all phone have video/camera function on them nowadays.
Good luck

Yes I use the V3 Razar... Aluminium case!!! 'nuff said...

Actually I thought it may be flimsy being so thin, but after several drops on hard tiled floors... It's still going strong!

Agree the camera is not the best quality though.

You can customise the GUI but if you are so used to a Nokia, any change away from another Nokia will need a learning curve...

Re: *think NSX*

Most of you are not listening to what the OP said he required in a phone and are recommending stuff with all sorts of bells and whistles. So I'm going to avoid that. If the requirements have changed, then my recommendations below would completely change.

I'm a mobile phone junkie, I've owned dozens from the cheapest to the most expensive PDA/Smartphone/everything.

Nokia - they by FAR have the best RF of any manufacturer. If you are ever in fringe areas with poor signal, this is the company that will keep you talking or enable you to make phone calls where other phones will just say "NO SIGNAL". Almost any phone they make will do.

The ONLY other phone I've ever used that's come close in reception is the Motorola V3 RAZR (which is what my wife now uses).

We live on an island and the nearest cell tower is 4 miles inland so RF is critical to us. If you don't want bells and whistles and want a good basic phone that looks good, the RAZR is what I'd recommend even if you don't care about RF (it's the only non-Nokia phone that we've found that works at our house).

BTW, someone talked about bluetooth, I find it handy too, unless your carrier is Verizon, in which case it doesn't matter. Verizon has ALL manufacturers cripple the bluetooth functionality on every phone they cell. Cingular on some of their phones disable MP3 ringtones (easy workaround by converting the mp3 to another supported format).

Nokia

Hi Neo.

I was in the market a few months ago. Like yourself, I was looking for something to really just make calls and do some texting. I also wanted something slim that could fit in my pocket. The slick design and compact size of the RAZR was very tempting; however, I thought the interface left much to be desired, although it was not as bad the one on the Sanyo I used to have. I had three Nokias in the past, so I have probably been a little spoiled by their excellent interface. I have not had a chance to try out the Sony-Ericssons, but based on what others say, they look quite nice.

I ended up going with the Nokia 6230. It has what I was looking for as well as bunch of extra stuff I really don't need (MP3 player, expandable memory, camera, FM radio, EDGE network connectivity, etc.) If you text quite a bit and are less concerned about size than I was, perhaps one of the models with a full keyboard, such as the Nokia 6822 would suit your needs.
