Hey all, I think you guys will enjoy this story. I had the pleasure to speak to a gentleman named Pete this past weekend. The warehouse in Ypsilanti I store my car at has an 'open house' every first Saturday of the month. Usually there's a guest speaker (June 1 will be Dave McLellan Corvette chief engineer from 75 to 92). The crowd is older, but passionate and extremely knowledgeable. Anyways, I was pulling mine out to drive for the weekend and chatted with a few people, well one guy had an NSX hat on. We chatted more and started to talk about how he was in product planning at Mazda then at Honda. One of his tasks was to monitor the NSX and make a case study for the Integra Type R. Anyways he told us a few stories, I want to share two. The first one was about how the name Spa Yellow came into existence. It was originally supposed to be Indy Car Yellow, but Indy was suing Cart, and Honda was the main Cart engine manufacturer so Indy Car Yellow had to be renamed. Obviously Senna Yellow would be great, but apparently it's difficult to use the Senna name. Pete even found a flower from a Brazilian Tree named Senna that matched the color profile, but it was still a 'no-go'. Well countries used to be represented by colors Silver-Germany, Green-British, Blue-French... Yellow was for Belgium. Spa (in Belgium, was a track Senna won 5 times at) so ... Spa Yellow became a thing.
The second and best story was part of why the Zanardi came into existence. By 1997 Honda was loosing money on each car due to the exchange rate between the yen and usd. He pitched (or was part of the team that pitched it) bringing a type R to the states as a way to help offset the loss. Essentially charging more would help close the gap, plus give the Honda brand a nice boost. It didn't need to be a type R, a type S or type S zero could work. Well he ended up leaving before the plans got finalized. He said when he heard it was called the Zanardi edition he was ecstatic! 'Couldn't have come up with a better name'.
He was fantastic to chat with and I loved the stories. Figured you all would enjoy them as much as I did! It's pretty cool the people you can run into, and the passion everyone has for these cars.
**Edit forgot to mention Acura of Troy was able to cut the monel key for me. I was able to test it in my ignition and trunk lock and it works great! So far so good with them.
