How big is this car compared to the TL?

hahaha WTF its Automatic in its highest trim level... wootif, btw thats pretty damn cool though

I love this car. It looks amazing and the price is great. The IS300 was a competitor to the 3-series, which puts it against the G35 and TL in terms of pricing and size.

We absolutely love our IS but I'm the first to tell you that it isn't a good competitor for a BMW 330i. I'm also the first to tell you that it shouldn't be because we paid appx. $13K or a significant % less for our Lexus than we would have for a similarly equipped Bimmer.

I am really excited about the new IS as the wife has the new car buying bug right now. My only constrenation, and it's a serious one, is that Lexus is making a huge mistake by not offering the big engine model with at least the option of a manual tranny. Big mistake, IMO.

We're signed up for the Taste of Lexus preview event in a couple of weeks and I'm looking forward to ringing the new car out then. I'll reserve final judgement until then but the lack of a MT and the fact that you can't completely disable the electronic nannies are bummers, in my mind.

I believe it's a six speed auto with paddle shifters by the steering wheel. Not too shabby if you ask me.

I read about the electronic issues in a review of the GS. I believe the IS has the same things. There are alot of electronics on these cars to avoid accidents, but they kept engaging during cone courses and throwing everything off. They kept sensing the cones as potential accidents with no way of turning it off.

Is it just me or does anyone else agree that the new Lexus' are becoming more and more BMW like in design??

Also I don't have high expectations from the IS after test driving a GS 430. A Complete waste of money especially when your paying about 50k for a "sports luxury sedan" that feels cheaper than a accord.

I think they are aiming at BMW. I'll have to give them props for at least trying, which is more than Honda is doing. I haven't been in a Lexus for a few years. Are you talking about fit and finish being cheap? I always thought they were really good in that department. Have they slipped some?

I was commenting on their overall quality. The car just felt "cheap" I don't really know how to explain it other than when I test drove the RL the car felt solid, whereas the GS felt shabby? the pick up and go wasn't all that great either for a V-8.

A couple of examples:
My mother purchased a brand new 04 Lexus LX 430 and traded it in soon after with only about 10k miles for a Porsche Cayenne TT because she was unhappy with the way the car felt. She complained that the car "felt cheap" especially for a 75k car. While with her P-car she had no complaints whatsoever other than the car accelerates to fast!

My father was contemplating a trade in on a GS 430 for a daily and then decided to keep his daily accord because he felt the Accord had better build quality :  lol

Is250/350

Based on EPA classification, the new gen' Lexus IS250/350 is considered a compact... same as the Acura TSX. Both have nearly identical exterior dimensions, engine performance (IS250), etc. Of-course the Lexus offering is rwd like it's predecessor w/ option of awd, the Acura being only fwd.

As far as import, entry-level, premium sports sedans...

Compact:
Lexus IS250/350
Acura TSX
Infiniti G35
BMW 3-series
Mercedes Benz C-class
Audi A4
Jaguar X-Type

No man's land:
Acura TL

Mid-size:
Lexus GS330/430
Acura RL
Infiniti M35/45
BMW 5-series
Mercedes Benz E-class
Audi A6
Jaguar S-Type

Where are the American cars in that premium sports sedan list?

the interior is great looking... i kinda think the outside looks like a cross between a 3-series and a scion Tc?!?!?!

definatley more aggressive looking than a G35 sedan though..

I saw a white one on the road today - just like the one in the picture. When I saw that car, I thought "man, that looks really small", then I had to remind myself that it was an IS not a GS. It looks really good in white.

Not a knock or flame, merely an observation.

I'm amazed at how perceptions can be so different from person to person. The current generation Accord, IMO, is a great car but can't hold a candle to the GS in terms of quality of materials, fit and finish, or build quality.

I don't know what an LX430 is, I suspect you meant either the old 450 or a current 470 but the Lexus version of the Landcruiser is universally acknowledged to be one of the best build SUV's in the world. Moreover, the interior quality in particular really stands out. We nearly bought one (now that gas is $3.50/gal. I'm glad we didn't) and we thought they were spectacular.

Again, just an observation.

I've been waiting to see it in person. Almost bought the IS 300 a few years back. The manual was definitely a lot more fun than the auto ...
This weekend, hopefully will get a chance to drive it during Taste of Lexus event here in Houston ...
Will post my impressions if I get the chance to drive it!!

Cheers .. Gus

I drove the new IS250 awd yesterday. The auto seem slow, but when I switch to paddle shifter the car wake up. I have so much fun driving it with the paddle shifter. I will have a white one w/nav early next year. Can't wait to drive the IS350.

Is there an IS350 Manual coming?

It's still not and never will be a BMW. Expect good first-year sales, and then a marked decline, petering out at end of model cycle, where they repeat.

The TL will continue to outsell all the rest by a landslide. People buying japlux cars want a VALUE proposition to trade for the prestige they've given up. Acura and Infiniti are basically equivalent in everyone's minds. When people think Infiniti, they think of the G35, either sedan or coupe. Acura, people think TL. W/ Lexus, hmm...they don't seem to have a defining car and they price themselves like they think they're BMW, but they clearly aren't. Their best entries are when they price at a significant discount to German with no other Japanese competition, like the LS and the other SUVs. The RX has been their sales leader for some time and a small sports sedan, even with an enviable 306hp, isn't going to dent the roundel.

What I want to know is, Nissan and Toyota have crossed the hp gap w/ Honda and they aren't using variable lift. Far as I can tell, these are VVT engines, and the Celica GT-S plant is still the only variable lift Toyo plant. VTEC is a technology which enables considerably more HP on account of having a dual lift component. Yet, Honda seems content to have technically inferior VT systems match VTEC. Used to be that the Honda engines always had the most HP.
