Jinks engine build thread

so clean!!! I can't recall... did you get a new blower too?
No it is the same one. Less than 6k miles on it though. That was thoroughly cleaned as well. The oil and coolant made it all the way through the compressor housing when it blew up.

Cheer up, Jinks!,

It will be alright. We all wish the NSX was like a Civic in terms of parts pricing and availability, but it is a very rare car and parts availability is always an issue. Speaking from experience; every build has its set backs and headaches. If you've read my build thread, I've been more drama than the young and the restless! lol

When you get it back (and you will), it will be better than before and far more enjoyable. If it makes you feel better at all, I haven't had mine for about 4 years. When Gil had Ravi working on his, he didn't have it for 5 years!

Hang in there and do everything right the first time. You don't want to go for a second round! :)
Thanks for the kind words.

Looks like it's coming along together real nice, man! The blower looks fresh -- hell everything looks fresh. Despite the wait, that still must be a real nice feeling seeing the progress.

RYU, you were right. It is a brand new blower. Shad forgot to mention to me that when he sent my original to CT for cleaning and rebuild, they just gave him a brand new one and rebuilt my original. So I got a freebie. This blower is the newest whipple version with a sight glass built in. No more dumb dip sticks. I also am adding new shafts to the car from insane shafts. The motor is in. Should be turning over this week. Till then, snap necks.

yay! more neckbreaker pics! lol
Yeah sorry. Something about Shad’s cell phone makes it impossible to post correctly. For some reason they only post here sideways. Which is what the car will be when I am behind the wheel. SIDEWAYS.....

What do you guys recommend for a new engine break in? I’m new to it. The car is being covered transported back home to Florida. So I will not be putting same rpm highway miles on it. Any recommendations?

Won’t it be broken in on the dyno? How else will they tune it?

Yes he is breaking it in on the Dyno with motul oil. Just looking for do’s and dont’s If there are any. Thanks.

when My car was new the factory recommended varying the rpm when cruising....i.e. don't stay at the same rpm too long...

Yeah, that is why Shad did not recommend 3000 hwy miles driven home at cruise control. Any other thoughts? I know the clutch break in. Just wondering if there are any others for the motor. If I ever needed support from the community, it is now.:loyal:

I drove a brand new car from Phoenix to Miami. I didn't cruise at the same speed in the same gear for more than ten minutes at a time. You'll be fine with Florida driving. Just don't rev and build too much boost. Once I hit 1k miles, I got the oil changed and I started bring it to redline a few times.

Amongst engine builders, there seems to be a few different thoughts on break-in.

Since you paid for Shad to do the rebuild, the only break-in instructions you should follow are Shad's. That way, you are both covered... He knows break-in was done correctly, and you know it was done his way for any potential warranty issues.

My break-in was pretty elaborate. 10W30 non-synthetic, no-detergent oil for the initial start and warm-up to operating temperature. Then a drain, filter change, and fill with Joe Gibbs break-in oil for 500 miles. Even though I built the engine for FI, I did not have any FI hooked up for the break-in process and instead used the OEM ECU to go out and seat the rings. I have a TFX cylinder combustion pressure monitor on one cylinder that I could monitor and see peak pressure increase as the rings seated. In my opinion you need to follow specific steps to load the engine, and also use it for compression engine braking. After 500 miles with the break-in oil, I used non-synthetic oil for about 4k miles during my normal daily driving. Now I have synthetic in it.

Agree with Mac Attack on letting Shad take as much ownership about the break-in as possible. Jinks as you might recall we corresponded offline about another DA customer who had to have his motor rebuilt 3x.

OR......................
You can hand me the keys and I could BREAK the car alright.. :D :) :P

He’ll be doing some break in on the Dyno and also some street tuning. I’m going to try my best not to push hard for 1000 miles but it’ll sure be tough.

Yes, I remember. And no, you cannot drove my car. You’ll just get it all strung out on METH.

You guys should see my thermostat and water pipes on the car. Shad had to glass bead them just to get them to accommodate the new coolant hoses. New thermostat installed as well. Thing was beat to hell.

No work being done this week. But the coolant tank is in. Notice the sight glass on the blower. Pretty neat. No dip sticks.

Wow man! It's finally all coming together. Good way to start off the new year!

I envy your engine bay! That is amazing. Excited to see what kind of numbers you'll get.

All three thumbs up! Great to see. A happy new year!
