I am trying to understand how two cars can have similar VINs but be different...

Over on the Marketplace there are two cars with identical VINs save for the second digit/position. The 1991 shows an "N" and the 2002 has an "H". Otherwise, identical. I took a spin over to the Wiki and could not find where the second digit could be an "N".

I am not interested in either, just wondering how this can be.

If you read more into that wiki, there are many inconsistencies with the 2002's VIN.

I think he lifted (copied and pasted) the other ad and just didn't update the VIN. It happens. People get busy.

As to the one with the N, that was the 1991 model. In the ad, he corrected the VIN.

So, we have a seller that listed a 2002 using the VIN of a 1991. Like I said, probably an oversight.

If you're ever in doubt as to whether a VIN is valid, Prime member Ojas created a VIN checker (ojas.net/nsx/vin) which I have found to be very accurate and which even explains which digits are invalid
