High Lift Cams

Mark B. told me over New Years that while aftermarket cams don't deliver much bang for the buck on a NA NSX, they can really make a difference when combined with forced induction. I'm about to put a SC on my car and I'm wondering three things:

1) Do others experiences match that claim?
2) Does anyone else besides Comptech sell high lift cams (CT's are too much $ IMO)?
3) Does the amount of lift need to be "tuned" for the SC for performance and reliability?

Thanks!

Mark B. indicated that the cams will generate quite a bit more hp when combined with a SC than w/o. I don't remember exactly the numbers, but 410+ hp comes to mind. So I would say the motivation is even more hp than just the SC can generate.

Didn't you have custom cams made for your Turbo David? I realize the application is quite different. I'm just wondering if it's worth doing in a SC application and if they can be found for less $ than CT wants.

He had dynoed 2 cars w/BBSC's, the only (or main) difference being the cams. Like I said, I don't remember the exact numbers, but the total was definitely over 400. I'm pretty sure they were 3.2's.

With forced induction, more lift will not make much of a difference. You want as much duration as you can get with very little overlap (scavanging happens a lot faster with manifold pressure).

I had Crower re-grind my VTEC lobes for $500. I am waiting (about a month now) for bearings, but will let you know how they work if you are willing to wait a few (hopefully) weeks.

David - my bad, but I thought you had *new* bumpsticks ground and your OEM camshafts are in your garage as a door prop.

Did Crower actually lower the valve lift by shaving the lobe? Wouldn't this be opposite of the high HP goal? Me thinks that FI or NA, more lift and / or duration means more HP.

Oops, I re-read the above post about lift vs duration. However, how can duration be increased by grinding a lobe profile? If anything, the duration is reduced if metal is removed, no?

I believe this is the cam that Cybernation sells in US(but just a guess). Anyway from their website, it seems it's for high HP NA use.

I would love to see someone look into an affordable cam package for the NSX, NA and forced induction. David, might already be doing this, ???? I think with all the newly supercharged cars running around because of the BBSC, there will be a market for them if they could be brought to us at a reasonable price. From what I understand, on a forced induction car, cams can be a nice hp increase. It's the R&D on the specs which is costly and time consuming correct? Not the actual regrinding. Granted you would have a regrind vs a new cam but, I would imagine that is the only way to make them somewhat affordable. On this subject, if these cams to come to be, I would think that an adjustible cam timing gear would be a great way to tune, as well as being relatively inexpensive. Anyone else have any thoughts?

My cams were only $500, which I consider to be pretty reasonable. As I have stated, I will let you know how they work when I get my motor back together (waiting about a month now for bearings).

Revolution also has cam gears. Cybernation has no information on them and has not been able to get any. So, I called Revolution driectly last night, but no one there speaks English. We never got past 'mushi mushi.' I am trying to get around that problem and ill let you konw if I do.

Hmm..adding lift for SC cars? I don't think so.

Some of the fastest hondas in the world are using the stock cams....Lisa Kubo for example (9.16 @ 157.48 mph) The builder of that motor could not find a single cam where they could extract more power then the factory vtec cam. As David said above, it's a balancing act between duration and overlap...not lift. The vtec overlap is minty from the factory.

Also i believe toda makes nsx cams..but i didn't see it on their page when i visited. Maybe they stopped because lack of sales. Toda makes some AGRESSIVE racing parts. They do sell some amazing nsx motors like this GT500:

It's "Moshi Moshi"

Mushi means bugs

I believe JUN Auto Mechanic also makes some "pre-made" aftermarket cams for the NSX, but I didn't see any on their site. Maybe they quit making 'em.

I myself am going to be taking on the challenge of making big NA horsepower....Hi-lift cams are really hard to come by, as I have been finding out...Mark B. and I have been doing some NA brainstorming to find a setup for my car(amist the BBSC take-off), and decided that cams and engine management are in order....I belive the answer could be some nice JDM cams like Revolution,Toda, etc and acompatible NA ECU....but doing any kind of technical research on any of these is next to impossible...I also tried to order a Mugen ECU for months until I was finally notified that it was discontinued....It seems like my whole NA Cams/Engine mangement dilema might be drawn out a little longer un less I happen to win the lottery and pick myself a turn-key GT500 race motor.. ha ha
The price on the Revolution website for their cams and ECU are reasonable considering the amount of horsepower to be gained...but availability is probably zip and who knows what the specs are unless you speak Japanese(maybe I should take that next Sem.?)

Get a programmable system. That way you can tune perfectly for exactly the mods you have.

According to their website, Revolution carries two types of cams. One that's for the street and the other being more aggresive. It seems like they regrind your stock cam. Additional $1000 or so if you don't send them your original cam. It seems that many Japanese tuners prefers HKS F-Con V Pro. I think this is what revolution uses to tune their big throttle kit and beyond. I wonder what their 360-380NA NSX is like!

They have a VERY strong bias towards Japanese products.

While it is a decent system, I do not think it is any better than the AEM/Haltech/Electromotive units and is not in the same league as Motec. Also, it has almost no support in the US. In fact, they only recently botherd to write an English version of the software and I have heard the translation is pretty sloppy.

If I were chosing a system right now, I would pick the AEM, hands down.

AEM does seem to be very good. All necessary harness already made. And surprisingly they make one for NSX!

I have been really leaning toward a programmable engine management sytem in the last month, my two roommates are running HONDATA engine management on their cars, one is a fully built NA B20 motor in an Integra, the other is a turbocharged built H22 in an Accord.....both of these setups are awesome....The HONDATA does every PC prgrammable function plus they offer preset codes, and a few other different features like full throttle shifts and staging rev hold.....all kits are plug and play, they use all the stock sensors and can be romoved for emissions purposes. and when you dyno tune them with a professional you can get it real nice numbers and reliability...They come in much less in $ then the AEMs which we also have available. Point of the story is that HONDATA is working on a NSX program, and with it the tuning capabilities would be endless (not to mention full throttle shifts, my roomies car is so cool). I am hoping I can get a hold of a real aggresive cam set and then hopefully use a program like this...Check out the web site--www.HONDATA.com...they have some really cool stuff.

BTW- if anyone knows of information on a nice NA cam drop me a line-thanks

Take care everyone-

Seth
