Hi Guys/Gals,

I urgently need your help!

Here in Dubai our racing association is mandating that all pre-2000 model year cars (including my NSX) have to fit a FIA approved roll cage for a time attack series. If I owned a 2001 - 2005 NSX I wouldn't have to...go figure!?!?

Now with this in mind I'm not keen to add a rollcage to my brand spanking new interior if that means having to cut this or that to fit one in. I understand the need for safety (hence my new Brides) but if I can get away without having to install a rollcage (just trying my hand at this series) then I'd do it. Please clarify if there's an option whereby I can put in and take out a rollcage without modifying the interior...

Now with this all in mind is there someway that I can prove my 1991 NSX is just as safe as the 2000 - 2001 model year cars in terms of structural safety? Targa's vs. Coupes scenario and especially if the coupes remained unchanged for 2000-2001.

If they want a FIA approved Roll cage then I think you are screwed. You can always ask if a Roll bar would be good enough but I doubt it.

How about doing some DE's instead?

Shouldn't your +02 conversion qualify (as long as no one looks at the VIN#) ??? Worth a try...

Show them the video of the JDM NSX rolling at Castle combe last year ... that would show that the passenger cell structure is strong enough for what you are thinking of doing ....

HTH, Paul

The bride seats will help you feel the car better especially at high G conditions. But it's hardly a safety measure. IN many ways, especially the roll over; the 5 or 6 pt. seat belts with the bucket seat with no roll protection is more dangerous than regular seat. (With that said, I still have the same set up. )

There are numerous posts for the discussion for the clarification...

I don't think you want to "try" and get away with anything over in Dubai... That said, I don't think any FIA Roll Cages are simple bolt in...

I would suggest you talk to the chief safety steward for the event and find out exactly what they want, as that is who you need to impress. "FIA approved" really means different things depending on the context. Find out what he has in mind for the min bar.

It is certainly possible to design a proper solution that adheres to the essential requirements outlined in 253J without severely displacing the interior. Done correctly, it can also feature dismountable joints [8.3.2.4]
