Help! Engine cuts off at 7000rpm

Cold engine trying to protect itself is my guess!

Do you have an automatic? If so, then you don't have a problem, they don't rev as much as a standard.
If you have a standard, and the engine is cold, then the Rev limiter drops down to protect your engine. Once warm....take it to the skyyyyy!

It's a manual transmission. I think it has a stock chip. No other mods. The engine isn't cold. It does it in all gears. I checked out some other sites and someone said something about vtech. I noticed that my vtech doesn't work either and the check engine light is on. Looks like this isn't a common problem. Any more ideas?

The ECU thinks the engine is cold. You probably have a "06" code, temp sensor failure.

If the code is a "06" AND the wiring is OK then get these items:

(1) 37870-PJ7-003 Water Temp Sensor
(1) 91307-PK2-005 O-ring

That and a few gallons of coolant should do it:).

Does your speedometer work good. If it doesnt engine light goes on and it cuts out at 7000. It happens to my car.

larry - can this also occur if the ecu thinks the engine is too hot? at the track on hot days i can get several good laps in, then the speedo drops out and my redline becomes 7000. sometimes i get a CEL, sometimes i don't. water temp gauge never strays far from center and everything is fine after a cool down period. stock 92 motor (except for exhaust) w/ fresh coolant (actually plain water plus wetter).

Who gest an Automatic NSX? They should have never even made them,, IF you cant drive stick you shouldnt be in the car to begin with!! haa just my 2 cents,,

nice way to eliminate people with disabilities or handicap's

ass

Thanks for all responses with solutions. I'll try them all and see which one fixes it. I'll update as soon as I can. Maybe someone else can benefit from the solution in the future.

Thanks

You should start by pulling the code for the CEL.

Your issue sounds like the Vehicle Speed Sensor, that is pointed out in Post #12:). Commonly known as the VSS.

thanks larry, i'll check that out (somehow i overlooked post #12, /me smacks forehead). that would obviously explain the speedo problem, and presumably erratic vss readings could confuse the ecu to the point that it reverts to limp-home mode (lower redline, etc). i'll report back after my next track day.

i pulled the code(s) off the ecu, one long and seven short blinks of the CEL which i assume is read as 17 which i believe is the code for VSS. it just so happens that my lemons race car (88 integra) also was throwing a CEL and *it* was code 17 which is VSS on that platform. i must be jinxed with some sort of VSS curse.

Similar issue for me:

Check engine came on when on the track and now the engine is shutting down at 7200 rpms. As far as I can tell the speedometer was working fine.

Doctor Larry is diagnosing VSS.

I also had this problem previously and all the suggestions I recieved on here were similar to those you are getting now......however nothing worked since I was pulling no codes at all, the thermostat, and all my sensors were replaced and brand new and still the problem did not get fixed. My last resort was to get a new ECU from a 1992 NSX (smae model as what I had) I sent it to SOS and they installed their supertune ECU. When I got it back I was redlining to 8300 rpm all day and night. I found out later that an automatic transmission NSX ECU was installed in my NSX which was a 5-speed manual NSX. Whoever changed the ECU is an idiot.

Either way hope this helps!

heh, what a bummer but at least you got satisfaction in the end. i just came in from the garage - pulled the vss, opened it up, cleaned out the black cruddy grease, packed with fresh electrical grease, and reinstalled. a test drive shows everything working normally including a couple of 8000 rpm pulls but the real test will be my next track day later this month.

Just great! Another NSX finds itself owned by someone with an amazing perception of the perfectly obvious but the inability to comprehend it.

You just made my day!! This is the funniest thing I've heard in a while!

I'm also having the exact same problem, the only ECU code is the TCS which I don't have, can this be the cause of it?
I'm in the process of installing the AEM EMS will this symptom go away with it?
