Hello Everyone,

This is Michael; I sold my '01 NSX Red/Tan beauty quite a while ago. I have owned and restored my '71 914-6 since that time. I am considering getting another NSX and wanted to get back on this forum.

OK, so here is my 914-6; yes, it is an original 914-6 of which about 422 were built in 1971. I consider it a relative of the NSX because they are both mid-engined roadsters. I am the 3rd owner and it looked nothing like this when I bought it in 2010. It was black and a mess. We completely stripped it to a chassis, media blasted it and then went to work on rust and panel repair/replacement. The original 2.0 6 cylinder engine was lost during the 2nd owner's possession and we built it with an '87 3.2 Carrera motor with factory fuel injection with a few upgrades during the rebuild resulting in about 240 HP. Then, last May I bought a '95 911 3.6 (993) Carrera motor with only 18K miles on it and a good friend and I installed that motor and I sold the 3.2 engine. That brings me to about 300 HP but the best part is its now twin-plugged and hydraulic valve lifters. That gives me a much quieter engine with tons of torque. She drives great and pulls amazingly. I would not sell my 914-6, just add the NSX to the garage.

Anyway, just don't know which way to go; Gen. I or possibly a Gen. II. That is why I am back on this forum, hoping to help me decide.

As I recall, this was the best car forum I have ever been a part of in addition to 914World.com.

Cheers,
Michael :)

Hi Michael. 🎇Welcome back to Prime! 🎆

That is a beautiful 914, and with 300 HP it must be a riot! I wanted one my whole life but then the NSX came along.

@Honcho may be able to resurrect your old account - look for a 📥.

Gen I vs. Gen II is a question. 🤔 Both awesome cars, but I'd be surprised to find an NA shopper cross shopping an NC as they have little in common other than a name short on vowels. You know the NA2, and there seem to be a fair # NC's available as well. We look forward to hearing which way you go. It was easy for me. When they orphaned the Gen 2 after 5 years instead of releasing the targa top I was expecting, NA is the only convertible!

Another '01 Red/Tan will be hard to find; they only made 19.

welcome back! I have always liked the 914/6, kinda like the Germanic Europa. I also love the other 2 cars that were the German and Italian versions of the nsx, the M1 and the 246 Dino

as we always say get the best version of whatever you can afford. You have the luxury of being Handy, a real advantage when deal hunting. Most folks who have driven both NA1-2 say the biggest improvement is the 6 speed. The extra 25 hp can be had with a good set of headers/exhaust for NA1

Ask and ye shall receive. :) I merged your accounts and sent you a password reset. Welcome back to the forum!

I wasn't sure myself, but I asked @centerpunch and he said it was the best.

You don't always get more just because you paid more. Just ask the guy who bought an old air-cooled Porsche from Gerry Seinfeld.

Thank you very much Honcho. It is great to be back. Now I have to find another '01 NSX....may be difficult.

What a blast from the past! In all my years of selling NSX's, your transaction was one I will never forget!

Hope life's treating you well and good luck on the NSX search. Happy to help if I can.

Hi Mike! I often think of you and that purchase; I loved that '01 and you were a great guy to deal with.

I have been retired for over 3 years, relocated to Auburn and we are just finishing up a complete remodel of the home we bought in October 2022 as well as a home we are building on our property for my twin brother. That home has a nice garage, 44' x 36' with a 13' ceiling and we have an in-ground scissor lift as well as a 2-post asymmetrical lift. It has its own HVAC system to keep it comfortable; will be a nice place to play with cars.

My wife told me once the houses are complete I can shop for a new toy to add to the garage. Both cars I am considering are proving difficult to find. I want a '98 993 S coupe (Porsche) or an '01 NSX- I really like the hidden headlights.

Life has been good and retiring was the best move ever.

You, sir, have excellent taste.

I would mention, however, that the so-called "narrow body" cars (non-"S" model 993) are actually pretty wide. At every car event I attend, folks come up and say, "Ooh, this is the wide body one, right?" But it's not- just a standard 1995 C4.

To my mind, the "S" models have a big price premium for no real benefit, either aesthetic or functional. But each to his own!

Thanks Centerpunch; nice garage. Yeah, we bought a new '97 Carrera 6-speed coupe and it was a nice car. White/tan and was my wife's daily driver until we sold it in 2005 or 2006. I loved it but this time, if I can find a nice one, it would be the S. Had a '10 Carrera 4S 6-speed that was a great car too; sold that and bought the Macan GTS. Had a bunch of other Porsches too. Now, I really want to remain air-cooled with Porsche though.

Centerpunch - That is indeed an ideal car- even the color is right; but, I am just not ready to pull the trigger yet. We are just completing a complete interior/exterior remodel of our home and building a 2nd home on our property that is my brother's home with an attached 1600 sq. ft. garage. Our home should be done by mid-March (hopefully) and his home, hopefully by the end of May. Once all that is done I have to tackle some landscaping work and then I can look for a toy. To be honest, the 2001 NSX is in the lead at the moment. :)

I have decided if I buy another NSX, I would shop for an '01 in original condition with low miles.... yeah, that should be fun. But, I still want to wait until both homes are completed. Thanks everyone, I appreciate the feedback. Michael

As an observation, 2000 and 2001 appear to be identical in specification which doubles the number of potential cars to shop from. Between '97 and 2000 the major performance improvement was the ABS system in 2000. The 2000 and 2001 met the LEV standard which may or may not be important for you - air injection pump is just another failure point? Most of the other changes are cosmetic. If you can forgo the 2000 ABS upgrade, opening up the search to 1997 - 2001 model years greatly increases the potential candidates with cars that are pretty much functionally identical.

Unless you criteria is the absolute last of the pop up headlight cars!
