Half-Life 2 -- November 16th!

This makes it the better game. Graphics aside, it's gameplay that counts.

i have to totally agree with everything you said. I think D3 dynamic lighting is awesome, but for me there's more important factors like the art direction & textures. In D3 many wall textures looked like blown up bitmaps, and the dark lighting was used to hide mistakes. The little bit of D3 i played was so repetitious and the environments were too similar. The original HL was continually leading somewhere and had new environments. Sounds like HL2 is continuing that.

I think I am spending a good amount of my play time debating if I want to try the 6800 GT card, too.

GET IT!!!! :D :D :D The 6800GT works as a chick-magnet too... it's an undocumented feature. ;)

Neo, I have a brand new 6800GT 256MB card right here, still wrapped in the box, waiting to be unleashed! I know you have one of these bad-boys, but would you spend $500 bucks (video card + 500W PS) to improve a system that's at 1600x1200 med (settings), to 1600x1200 high? OK, you probably would...

You know, I bought it at Fry's, where they will allow me to return it if I don't like it. Yes, no kidding! But, I don't like having to resort to repackaged, returned goods when I purchase things, so I don't want to have to force it onto someone else like that.

I just got a copy.

WOW.
this system I'm on is:
dual opterons
2gig system ram
Quadro FX3000
benq 23" LCD widescreen monitor.

playing at 1920x1200, 4xAA, all settings "high"

it's STUNNING

<B>Autophile</B> : Yes I would. :D I bet you won't be returning it either. ;) Just make sure you've got the latest drivers from www.nvidia.com and you'll be laughing.

<B>0ctan3</B> : Isn't that your work computer? ;) :D

BTW, all you Naughty Naughty Boys who are wanting to pirate Half Life 2, read this from <A HREF="http://www.csnation.net/">csnation</A>: If you are seriously considering downloading Half-Life 2 through illegal means, do expect quite a fight from Valve Software. The following is a response from Gabe Newell when being addressed on the topic of pirated HL2 copies:
<I>"We're running a bit of an experiment. We're keeping track of the accounts that do this and will be shutting them off."</I>
In other words, Valve has launched their very own "warez" version of their pride and joy whose purpose is to nail down those pirates out there.

<B>Akira3D</B> : you can create a Half Life 2 multiplayer server. more details & instructions here: http://www.hl2world.com/

Dang, I've been playing this game almost all night! It's 5:30 AM, and I've been playing since about 10 PM...  Been driving the water buggy around... that's a blast! I like the engine sound. Kinda low-buck, yet rowdy, with incredible throttle response.

Neo, I suspect you've got me pegged. I imagine I'll be putting that card in tomorrow (today?). I've noticed a bit more lag during intense fighting scenes, so I think this card (Radeon 9000) has reached its limit.

Welcome back to the NVIDIA family! :D Trust me, the 6800GT is a daddy of cards (until SLI mode becomes available). <B>Arshad</B> is probably gonna flame me for my pro-nvidia comments. :p

I wish one of my mates would hurry up and buy HL2... i wanna go around and check it out. I've read that the Combine's Assault Rifle is the most deadly sounding gun ever in a game??? Is that true?

I also heard the ending's big spoiler - the g-man is Freeman's father?!

YES! I just wish it held more ammo.

I have to say the gravity gun is the coolest gadget yet. Late in the game the gravity gun becomes very useful, in fact it is your only weapon.

I am very close to the end of the game and suspect I will finish it tomorrow.

I installed the 6800 GT card today, and the game works much smoother on the heavy action scenes. I have the settings on max for all video settings. Maybe I should put that Doom 3 disk back in, and see what's up?

Steveny, that's incredible that you're almost done! I'm working my way through Ravenholm now.

How many hours gameplay all up? i've read that while the game is very linear, there are some spots you can spot and check out... like on the river?

Funny thing about buying a new top-end card, i always end up installing old games to check out the performance. :D Makes it feel like i've got my money's worth.

Did you guys buy HL2 or purchase it through STEAM?

If you guys are the type of guys to play the game once and be done with it, I would love to buy your old copies. Just a thought.

Bulletime for Half Life 2

This sounds cool! Now i want HL2 just so i can try this out! :D

<B>Matrix/Max Payne meets Half-Life 2</B>
<I>This small Half-Life 2 script makes the game go "bullet-time" when pressing "b" button and while in bullet-time the physics and ragdolls fly a lot further than in normal mode. Due to no physics on bullets except crossbow, grenades, rpg and bugbait, the other weapons' bullets won't slow down.</I>

Finished this morning. Excellent game, now for the multiplayer.

Multiplayer is good but I was hoping for TFC2 and not just CS2. I really miss dustbowl and warpath from TFC1.

Neo Freeman

Ok ok ok.... i confess... i yielded and downloaded Half Life 2 on the weekend. :D I finished a big project and this is my chill-out reward. any excuse. ;)

Playing at 1600x1200 just doesn't cut it, so i've been running it at 2048x1536. :D No need for AA at that resolution! <B>Akira3D</B> was totally right about the graphics being awesome.

I'm up to the start of Ravenholm (?). Loved the airboat (do i get to play with that again?). I also enjoy the simple puzzles often showing-off the physics. I *LOVE* the gravity gun.... hehehee... not always the weapon of choice in CQB, but it's so much fun ripping heaters off the wall and throwing them into the enemies. Sadist I know. :D

It does feel very linear, and some levels seem to go on a little long (ie. the canal). The storyline so far is... disjointed, but it's probably too early to tell. Load screens are too frequent (hehe... GTA:VC spoiled me there) Not too many other complaints; like everyone on the planet I dislike STEAM, but at least I didn't get any server-busy errors like some. But I have to be honest, I haven't had this much FUN with a computer game for a while. It's just plain fun trying out gadgets and exploring.

Just like Max Payne 2, the physics keep the game fresh -- no guy dies the same way, and it causes some really funny & cool effects. Check out the screenshot of a Combine who i blew up... he fell against the wall like this. funny stuff!

Without spoiling it, I especially enjoyed the bit when Alyx introduces you to the Gravity Gun. :D She's pretty hot for a computer character. (ok... it's time i got some natural sunlight :D :D :D)

Great game!!! Now i need to get some sleep.... :p :D

"Dog" rules!

The game is still very linear, but, you know, I haven't minded one bit. I haven't found myself bored yet. My wife and work are the only reasons I stop.

BTW, I'm now at a point where I have to survive an onslaught of who knows how many Combine soldiers, using three sentry guns to help hold off their attack. Wish my luck....my coworkers have warned me that this may take awhile.

Hey, it looks like HL2 Deathmatch is coming after all...Valve hinted that they had a "surprise for the community" last week and posted a screenshot today on www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=news. The file name is HL2DM.JPG...

Heh heh.

hehehe... yeah, dog rules. :) But Alyx is even better. :D

This HL2 deathmatch sounds very exciting. I'm over deathmatch-style games; teamplay is the only way to go. But I am way-over Counter-Strike. Even with CS:S, the little bit i've played was just like the old CS which i was bored of years ago. (no offense to any hardcore CS 1337 dudez reading this) Even the physics don't have much impact on gameplay which is hugely disappointing. But i didn't get HL2 for CS:S.... so no loss.

But HL2 deathmatch *WITH* physics.... now that sounds exciting. I dont remember, did the old HL1 deathmatch have team-deathmatch or capture the flag modes? And please value put the gravity gun into the game... please, please, please.

What am i wasting my time here for ... i want to get back to my saved game. :p

Alyx is pretty fine for a game character. I played death match this morning. The gravity gun is available in death match. It is a lot of fun tearing radiators off the wall with the gravity gun and killing the opponent with the radiator.

To answer your HL1 question, yes there was team capture the flag or command point games. They were the best game on TFC in my opinion. I spent most of my time on Dustbowl (capture the flag) or Warpath (capture 5 command points) maps.
I agree with you, run around and kill the opponent games don't thrill me either. If I want to be on my own trying to kill or be killed I would just play the single player mode. I like the maps that require team work and each player to have a different skill set, sniper, engineer, scout, etc. It makes the game more interesting and adds something to the game you don't get out of the single player or each man their own modes in multiplayer.

Did you guys ever play Day of Defeat HL mod? It was one of my favorite games of all time.

It IS! Played HL2 Deathmatch for roughly an hour this morning just to get a feel for the two maps they posted. Everyone starts off with the gravity gun, machine gun, a pistol, and some grenades...all of the HL2 weapons and plenty of moveable items appear to be scattered throughout the environment. The overwatch map (set in City 17) sounds like a warzone with constant gunfire. Using the gravity gun defensively seems to be key...catching what others are throwing around is almost as important as throwing things back. It's funny to watch people rolling cars through the environment. The lockdown map (set in Nova Prospekt) is also pretty cool...and I found a dark corner which gave me some nice sniping opportunities with the crossbow. As far as I can tell, both of these levels are straight from the single player game...I'm looking forward to more deathmatch-specific levels now that the SDK is available.

argh, worked late tonight and had a christmas dinner so i'll have to try HL2 deathmatch another night.

Rolling cars around?!? ROFL sounds exactly what i was hoping for.

Hey, at the moment in HL2 i just past a MASSIVE bridge (by going underneath) after driving along the coast. How far into the game am I? (i'm hoping there's still plenty to go)

<B>NetViper</B> : I have played DoD (not source, i didn't get that version). I love the "shovel". Donk!

<B>steveny</B> : Yes, ripping radiators off the wall is fun... but so is throwing wheelbarrows & engine blocks. :D And i agree 100% with what you said about teamplay. Deathmatch used to be fun, until i experienced America's Army's teamplay (which also has different classes). I love going medic and helping fellow teammates (some respond with "thanx"), or going an Engineer in other games like Battlefield 1942 and repairing tanks. Although the best thing about going Medic is you get to heal yourself. :p
I never got into TFC. Here in Australia when i tried it a few times, the servers were very empty (everyone in CS?) and there was no teamplay. too much sniping.

I think you are about 1/2 way through maybe a little less than 1/2. I like to play sniper when I teamplay.
Too bad you didn't get a chance to play TFC you would have loved it I am sure, especially dustbowl. Dustbowl is a timed map between two teams. There are 3 command points. The match starts off with one team behind a gate, the other team (red) gets 30-60 seconds to set up for battle on the other side of the gate. After the horn blows the gate opens and the team behind the gate (blue team) tries to run the flag to the 1st command point. After the flag is planted in the first command point the entire blue team is back behind another gate. There is another round and then a final round each round is a different map. The entire game is timed and if the blue team gets all the command points before times up then the blue team wins. If the red team holds off the blue team then the red team wins. I almost always played sniper. I like to keep back from the action and pick people off from a distance. Also if the sniper gun is charged up all the way the person that is shot with a fully charged gun will explode.

Neo, if you just crossed the bridge, you still have a way to go even to catch up with me (I'm not sure how far I am from the end, but I haven't played single player since my last post updating my location).

I didn't get to play deathmatch last night either...bah!

<B>steveny</B> : ROFL you camping sniper! :D You're the type of guy that i go after in games.... i love to rush snipers or sneek up from behind and melee kill them (maximum embarrassment :D ). Seriously though, that description sounds good... hopefully they'll make a TFC2.

<B>Akira3D</B> : only half way... that's good. I didn't have a chance to play anything last night, nor will I tonight! :( Since i mainly got this for HL2 (not CS:S) i want to get my money's worth... the longer the better.

Hey, have you guys ever reloaded a saved game of a sequence that was REALLY good? i've found myself completing a bit (ie. clearing out a house) and doing it again because it was so much fun. I never do that with other games.

When I feel the first stab of your knife is when I press the shift like mad (the key that turns the rifle into a club) and beat you to death.

If you like sneaking you would have probably played the SPY character on TFC. You could dress up in the color of the other team, sneak in past sentry guns and stab the opposing team to death without them ever knowing you were there.
