Gear & Differential Oil

For just normal use Honda MTL is great, if you track your car a lot or drive at very high speeds for extended distances you will need to use Red Line or a syntethic to prevent foaming. I use the Honda MTL as recomended by John Vasso at Acura of Brookfield.

Please explain the data/circumstances behind this reccomendation. Thanks.

Foaming

....if you track your car a lot or drive at very high speeds for extended distances you will need to use Red Line or a syntethic to prevent foaming.

WHY ????

If Honda thought this to be a concern, wouldn't they have recommended the above fluids in the owner's manual? Foaming tendency is not a function of synthetic vs organic fluid.....it is a function of viscosity. Therefore, if the wrong viscosity is selected, either organic or synthetic will foam.

As another data point, I used to run Redline synthetic. I switched to Castrol organic, and the latter is much smoother. I felt the difference in shifting immediately , even after not driving the car in six months.

I would like to toss in my 2 cents if possible. I am a firm believer in the Honda MTL as a good all round tranny oil.

I am an Acura tech and had a good customer in for a diff noise on turns. She confided that she had indeed tried a synthetic tranny oil for "better" shifting.

The noise was brutal, I dumped it and filled with the OEM oil and she is glad to have a quiet gearbox again.

Cheers all, one day I too will own one of these majestic steeds.

If you drive high speeds it's better to put a good synthetic oil in the tranny instead of the OEM mineral oil that tends to foam. that can cause a leakage (it did at my car) which is not only dirty but also dangerous (oil at the brakes).
Since I have the synthetic oil in the tranny everything is okay. This is the official recommendation of Honda Germany for
autobahn use.
