Garage lifts

Like you John I have a 10' ceiling height, it would work great. Keep me posted.

... and the neighbors are more worried than ever :D

I know the feeling. Our current home is our first house. Its nice, but its small, and in a neighborhood of simple 2-3 bedroom homes. Needless to say the NSX sticks out like a sore thumb.

In about a year we will be in a new home that we are about to begin construction on. In that neighborhood we will fit right in, but for now my neighbors here all think I must be up to something bad to be driving "a car like that" in their neighborhood. :D

I love these lifts though. The new place will have a three car garage, but I want to wall off the small bay to do my woodworking (hobby) in. With one of these lifts I'll still be able to get all three cars in the other two bay garage. Man I can't wait until the new house is built. :)

I just put in the same lift about two weeks ago! I bought mine from Northern Tools for 2999.99 shipped. I shopped around for quite a while before buying and it was by far the best price I found.

I still haven't gotten comfortable with seeing the NSX way up to the ceiling with only one leg holding it! I installed the lift myself with a couple buddies and I will tell you that it isn't a job for the faint of heart. If I didn't have a front end loader on my tractor it would of been almost impossible.

There are some downsides to this type of lift though, for one if you are parking under it all of the time, the post can be in the way for the passenger or driver side door. I also have a four post lift and this isn't a problem. Also there are bars that come out from the center post that you have to drive over when parking. My NSX is lowered with Teins and I don't believe that it would clear the ramp that they put over these braces.

Some of the benefits of the lift are a much cleaner look, very well made, and a separate unit to house all of the hydralics. This lift also has the ability to raise the car higher than my four post lift so I can walk under it quite easily. They also have another version that raises the car even higher for people with really tall garages.

My unit has solid galvinized panels, so that there is no possiblility of anything leaking on the car below. I use my other lift if I want to do any work on the underside of my cars. They gave me the choice of either version when I purchased the lift.

As far as garage doors and openers, you can raise your rails of the garage door tight to the ceiling and either add a panel to your existing door or put on a side garage door opener. I went with the commercial openers that mount on the side, these provide a much cleaner look than normal garage doors openers.

FYI - My 4 post list at its highest with my NSX on top goes like this.
Top of my car = 10ft.
Measuring under the lift(head room for the lower car) = 5'10"

There are 9 stops below the 5'10" highest that lower it 4 1/2" each. So, you could easily go down a foot and still be able to park another fairly low car underneath it and clear a 9ft. ceiling. If anyone would like me to take some more measurements, feel free to PM me.
Take care,
John

Can you somehow set a fixed stop that would prevent your wife from lifting a car into the ceiling?

Not with the two lifts that I have, both of them have the ability to crush your roof if the garage ceiling is low enough. I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to modify the lifts to provide some type of stop, but neither of my lifts have the capability without modifying them.

or a simple limit switch would work IMO.

How? Are you talking about putting some switch in that cuts off the power to the hydralic motor? This would work, but it would have to be a pretty hefty switch or you would have to tie it to a relay to cut off the main power. Or I guess you could take apart the up switch and wire this in series. You would also have to come up with some way to move the switch if you were ever going to put another car on the top. I think the easiest way is to get a lift that fits in your garage, if your garage is low enough to crush your car I would suggest being very careful or not getting a lift in the first place.

I have a simple limit switch on my 2 post lift that stops a high roof from hitting the top of the lift. You could use the same thing for the 4 or 1 post lifts.

switch

It is very basic. Just a padded bar and a switch that interupts power to the switch. I'm sure it would be easily adaptable for other lifts.

Anyone who is interested in buying lifts, I have contacted the VP of BendPak and he has given me some great prices on both the 7000lb 4 post lift and the 6000lb Single post parking lift You'll need to PM me, as these are a dollar away from distributor prices. I have a product code that is needed to get the price, which will include delivery to your door!
Take care,
John ;)

These prices will be good for 30 days. The prices are so low, they cannot be posted(please don't post when given prices please). To control these lifts from being bought and sold, your name will be put on the list to buy one when you contact me.

Single? Does your wife know about this? :D

Carguy!... did you get any estimates for the installation before you decided to tackle it yourself?

No I didn't get any quote on installation, but I imagine it would be pretty expensive. It isn't easy to get the single post to stand up without some type of forklift or tractor. I am not even sure who you would call to install something like this.

No worries, as I plan on doing group buys like this periodically as new products become available or discounted.
Thats Great  because I'm 9 to 12 months away from being ready to buy one too.

I would greatly appreciate if someone would help me solve this problem. Both myself and someone I work with would like to buy the 4 post lift. However, we have a problem.

I have a 9 foot garage and he has either 9 or 10. Two cars would fit stacked in my garage but the garage door presents a problem.

I spoke with several garage door companies who say it would be very difficult and expensive to raise the tracks of the door up to hug the ceiling. They're talking around $2000 for door modification and a new opener that has a longer reach to also stay out of the way.

How do you guys solve this problem? Is there a simple and inexpensive solution that I'm missing? For those that modified their door rails, how much did it cost?

$2,000 sounds a little high for this type of modification, but I really don't know what you are starting with.

I bought four new garage doors with commercial side mount openers with all new tracks for $10,000. Two were 18' x 8' doors and two were 9' x 8' doors. All of them were nice insulated doors with windows at the top. This price also included hauling off the old doors and openers.

My brother in law is looking into raising his garage door without replacing it and they quoted him $500 to raise the tracks add an extra panel and modify his opener. His house and garage door is only a couple of years old so the door is in really good shape.

I used a four post lift for a couple years without changing my garage door at all. With the NSX on the top and the lift positioned properly, I was able to raise the car so that the opener was where the trunk was and I was able to get enough height so that I could park a sedan height car underneath.

I have the same dilemma. It seems as though $2K is a bit much for a couple of extra vertical rails. As far as the door opener is concerned there is a company called Wayne-Dalton, that has a wall mounted door opener. Check their website: iDrive

Standard disclaimer applies!!

As was said above you need to add an extra panel as well as extend the vertical rails (even if the panel is inside the garage) so that the whole original lift mechanism can be relocated closer to the ceiling (by the same height as the added panel). This keeps all the door rise and radius geomitry the same. I am doing this on a new garage addition I just received the permit for today! In my case I desigened the new garage with 12 foot high ceilings and an 18' X 8' door so the door will rise within 1' of the ceiling using a standard lift motor in the center of the door between both vehicle bays and the 8' high door is normal looking from the street as oposed to a taller comercial unit. BTW 12' is what you really need to install a full size twin post asimetric lift. I'm buying a Chalanger 10,000 lb. lift (American made) from the distributor in Orlando for $3,095 delivered and installed. I used to own a shop and had several of these lifts. They are real commercial quality at a fair price.

Wow, that looks awesome!!! Too close for comfort, but that's MYNSX for ya, living on the edge. :D

Looking at mynsx's pictures, is the answer to put the lift far enough forward in your garage that the garage door when opened doesn't make it all the way to the car?

I don't care how cute your butt is, get the jeans off the F355:eek:
