Hello,

I have a question about the cost of fixing the NSX. I've sold my car to the dealer (not acura). Then he call back to me and said that the Engine Rod has problem, and he wants $5,000 from me to fix that probelm.

I would like to hear from perple around here about this price. Is this fair price? Because I don't know anything about the cost for fixing the thing like this. And I don't have the way to get the car back to fix it my self.

Any enlighten would be really appreciate.

Thanks

If you have sold the car, you are done. You don't owe the dealer anything unless you gave him some kind of written warranty (which I cannot imagine anyone doing).

"engine rod" is a very suspicous term. There is no one "rod" in the engine. There is a connecting rod on each piston (six total) but it would be nearly impossible to break one of those unless something else went seriously wrong with the engine first. There are cam shafts, but again that is not something that just suddenly fails out of the blue.

There is no single part called an "engine rod."

Thank you so much for fast respond.

Well I don't know I'm stupid or not, but here is the sitution. Actually the deal was completely done. I got money and he got the car. However he ask me for favor for this. He would like to split the cost with him in half. I feel that I'm a bad guy if I ignore him. So I come here to ask all of you about the cost that sould right. I don't want him to make more $$$ from me.

Thank you in advance for any advise,
Ek

I'd like to know how they determined that the car needed a new connecting rod(s) without tearing down the engine? When you dropped off the car did you notice any difference in the power over the past few weeks? I'm sure that you would have experienced loss of power and difficulties when starting the car.

I have cracked pistons, broken connecting rods, and blown engines, and until they have been taken apart it is difficult to determine the amount of damage and what caused it.

To answer your original question: I wouldn't feel bad if I were you. The dealer bought the car in as-is condition and I doubt that you knew there was a problem. Is he trying to scam you? I don't think so, but something doesn't sound right.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I really try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but it sounds like a scam to me.

He is a car dealer. He knows to have the car checked out before writing a check. And he would also know that he has no reason to expect money from you. So, even if the engine blew up the day after he bought it, I do not think a legitimate dealer would call you asking for money.

Maybe his scam is to start big ($5000) and make you feel guilty, and then work down to a smaller amount (say $1000) so you feel he's being nice by paying the majority and you're still being a nice guy for helping him out some. The end result is he just got an exta $1000 out of you.

Even if it really is broken, maybe he or one of his sales guys broke it by abusing it. For all you know they could have had it out on the highway at 120 MPH, and accidently downshifted into 2nd instead of 4th...

If you feel it is not a scam, please have him describe exactly what has failed (including the Acura part numbers), why it failed, and why he could not reasonably have found it during pre-purchase inspection. Then post the information here and we can help you determine whether there is any chance it is legitimate or not, whether his price estimates are correct, etc.

But I still think it is a scam.

Dear Dr. Lane:

Nothing different in the power in past 4 years since I have the car. But the thing is some weird sound in low RPM ,like pop pop pop pop ...(it is auto). But this problem was fixed when I have the Acura do the val adjust ment + 45k serviced. Thaat is all I can notice.

I'll be back again after I've talk to him,
Thanks,
Ek

maybe i'm just a guy who has spent too many minutes lately visiting www.urbanlegends.com, but this sounds like a troll to me.

in any case, my position would be: you bought the car, you had the oppty to check it out prior to purchase, you bought it, have a nice day.

Since the dealer bought it from you, he should have done his due diligence (if there even was a problem to begin with) If I were you, I wouldn't even call him back.

Thank you so much for all the respond, I really appreciate

.Today my dealer have already traded this car to the other out of town dealer already today (the car gone). They agree to split the payment in half (that’s what he told me). So my dealer pay half (~2500). To do him a favor he ask me to split with him (he takes 1500, and I take 1000)….. Lud… are you here

? Well I hate hassle, so I just give him $1000 and we done the deal. I don't know why I gave him the money. Maybe because it is not $5K as Lud said. I’m so sad that this thing happen. I think my AD still on the NSXprime market section. Well I should tell him to remove it though.
Again thank you to all of you for very useful info .

PS. I just found the spare tire in the basement. Anyone know how much I can sell this? (never been used).

Thanks every one

Ek I wish you would have not given him your money. Legally you owed him nothing based on what you've stated. Please post the name of this dealer so that no else does business with them. Also I think you may still have some legal course if you want your $1000 back from him. While I'm not a lawyer I'm sure there is some basis for a complaint based on being confused.

I agree with Hejo

I wouldn't have given him a thing espeically since he traded the car off anyways! But since your in such a generous mood write me a 1000 dollar check while your at it!

You can sell it in the usual NSX-specific places, such as the NSXprime marketplace, Chris's NSXclassifieds, and the NSX e-mail lists, as well as on eBay. Expect to get anywhere from $100 to $200 for it ($150 is a fair price IMO). List price is around $900!

Thanks every one, but he got my $1000 already. From this I think I buy lesson and get rid of all hassle. So every thing should end now. I'll not let the thing like this happen again in my life

hejo,

I really want to do this you know, but I afraid a lot more hassle legal stuff coming up, if I post the identity of the dealer. What I can say is they are in Kansasciy, MO. Hope this helps,
Ek

And, since there is only one dealer in Kansas City, Missouri - Jay Wolfe Acura - we can all figure out which one it is.

EDIT TO ADD: The dealer in question is not Jay Wolfe Acura, but is a non-Acura dealer, as noted below.

nsxtasy,

He is non-Acura dealer (as I told you in my first post on the top). The small store. Has 2-3 Porche, Benz-SL, JaG ,etc...

Jay Wolfe is the only one on the Missouri side, which the previous quote stated is where the dealer is located.

Have you tried getting a quote from Superior Acura, on the other side of the river in Overland Park, KS? They do a fair amount of NSX business there, and might be less expensive.

Talk with Gen. Ron Stafford of their sales staff, who drives an NSX; maybe he can work something out on your behalf with their service department.
