Engine Mounts

I recently purchase a fairly high-milage 1991 NSX. The engine "bucks" when accelerating (after coasting) or accelerating from a stop. I figure the engine (or tranny?) mounts need to be replace (or adjusted?). Before I take to the shop, is there a way for me to determine the if mounts need to be replaced?

I supposed this would be a job for the dealer. For those of you that have had similar work done, what should I expect to pay?

Thanks in advance.

I had this happen to me on an Integra before. Turns out the engine mounts were just loose. A few turns with a ratchet and they were ok on that car.

If you did decide to replace your mounts. Please let me know, I'll buy your old ones.

Thanks so much for the tip. I checked both mounts: I could not even turn the rear/lower one, but managed to get maybe 1/4 turn (maybe less) on the upper/front one. I was kind of skepitcal such small/quick adjustment could make a significant difference given how badly it bucks.

I just got back from a quick drive and the NSX is as tight, tight, tight! Just like my first NSX! Thanks again!!!

You have 4 motor mounts: 1 nose and tail, 1 at each shock tower. Check them all. Sounds like a shop forgot to tighten things up after removing the tranny/engine.

Seriously, I would check the car over for loose bolts. Get a service manual for torque specs. I got my car back from the paint shop and had a field day correctly putting the nose back on my '92. A 12 year old girl with pliers could have done a better job than this L.A. paint shop. I shudder to think the cost of all the parts that were going to fall off. I only lost 2 easily replaceable bolts.

I have a '92 with 117k and a repaired snap ring.
I just checked my mounts and found the one under the air cleaner to be 1 full turn loose. The rest were very tight.
Its amazing the change this small adjustment had on the car. Much smoother and easier to drive.

Thanks for the info!

I want to tighten mine, too. Can anyone tell me what page in the shop manual covers this?

I haven't noticed a problem, but tightening 4 bolts can't hurt, IMHO.
