Engine compartment latch not aligning

Haven't seen a post on the forum regarding this topic. My '91 engine compartment latch is stuck in the "open" position. It won't return to the starting position (6 o'clock) however it will open and close but with much less of a turn. It looks odd and I would like it to return to its original position but am unsure how to do it. I tried applying pressure to push it backwards or pull it off to "re-align" it but neither seem to work. Any ideas guys??
