During this morning's commute, I'm driving down Hawthorne Blvd in Torrance (not far from my home) and a GMC C6500 commercial truck decides to try to merge into my lane. It was a low speed collision, but the size of the truck tires and the spinning lug nuts did tear into the car pretty badly.



I drove home my new NSX almost exactly eight years ago...and this is the first time I've had to ask Prime for recommendations on body shops.

I'm hoping to find a place in the South Bay that my insurance company won't have problems with. They approve Prestige Too Auto Body in Torrance, but I'd much rather get your input before I take her there.

I'm also not sure if the wheel was bent or damaged...so I had her put on a flat bed and brought home (I did drive her into the garage...the engine is most certainly not damaged and nothing is leaking anywhere).

Can't help you with a shop rec but I'd like to express my condolences for the damage to your car. It looks totally cosmetic though and hopefully you'll be back on the road in no time.

Edit: Didn't notice the hit in front of the wheel at first. Definitely have the rear suspension thoroughly checked out for bent/cracked parts.
 
OMG! :eek: I'm sorry to hear that... I used to drive that road all the time!

Unfortunately I don't know any local body shops (I'm also interested to see which ones are recommended as I have some minor body work that needs to be done)

Just heard from a buddy of mine who had some work done on his 2003 M3. Check out Prestige Auto in Torrance... he said they do great work and they had lots of really nice cars that they were working on. HTH!

Wow, I know how you keep your car. Everytime I have seen it its always 100% mint.
A good shop is in order, then you can put this behind you.

Just b/c it costs $1500 to replace a fender - ive had a fender replaced on my 91 before and it was $1100 for the front passenger side... the word total or salvage never was apart of any conversation when I talked to my insurance company.

Also, it seems like the driver of the truck's insurance will be paying for this.
 
Ouch Eric ,sorry to see the damage:frown: I'm sure you will get good advice on local shops.If you intend to keep the car and have a strong emotional atachment to it I would get the best shop.I find the problems arise when budgeting for the repaint and the insurance companies baulking at the higher than expected costs for doing the nsx right.

a) that's going to cost alot more than $5000!!!
b) your best bet is to normally use the insurance company's preferred body shop EXCEPT if the shop is not experienced at repairing cars made of aluminum, which is very very hard....

My very strong suggestion? find a shop that repairs Mercedes, Jaguar, and Land Rovers.....it will not be a dealership, but they deal with cars (jaguar/land rover) that are made of aluminum, and will be able to do the repair properly. Call Jaguar and ask them who they send most of their cars to. Then call Land Rover (maybe same dealer) and do the same.....they normally go to the same shops....

the 5k figure is assuming the damage is limited to
-quarter panel
-rear lower valence
-rear bumper cover
-aluminum bumper brackets / bumper frame.

All of these pieces are bolt on (including the quarter panel) and can be replaced and repaired by ANY body shop (no special aluminum skills required to bolt on these pieces)

the worst part and most important part of this repair is matching the new formula red paint. to do this properly the shop will want to blend into the drivers door and rear decklid / spoiler. if i were the owner i wouldn't want the uneffected panels touched, as i've seen plenty of red nsx's repaired with bad paint matches to know the paint match will be the difference here.

if the damage extends into the decklid / spoiler or suspension frame then i agree that 5k is low

Sorry about your loss Erick. More important is that you're ok.

I took mine out yesterday. I was going to go a little than 2 miles. In that short trip I had three close encounters. Close encounters meaning I had to slam on my breaks, honk that little sweekie horn, etc.

Please be careful out there. All too often, they can't see us.

She'll be just fine. Make sure your (and their) insurance is lined up right. You're lucky that you have a red, so that color matching for an 8 year old NSX isn't difficult. Just don't skimp on the repair facility, as you know.

You'll be 100% back to normal in no time at all. :smile: She'll be just fine.

I agree. I would only add to call the closest Ferrari dealership and see who they use or would recommend. The 360/430 is aluminum right? I would trust a higher end place like that for a car like this than whoever is on the recommended list of your insurance company. And I used to work for the insurance company. :wink:
 
This is what did most of the damage:



My NSX's paint is on every single lug nut.

I really hope that my NSX has just cosmetic damage. I doubt it is anything more serious, but I do want someone I trust to inspect it. I'm going to be very selective on the body shop, but want the least amount of headaches from the insurance company.

I am definitely not at fault. I was driving straight and with the flow of traffic. The other driver was trying to merge into my lane. I heard the grinding before I felt my car get affected by the truck's weight...and I had to turn my head to actually see that he was making contact with my car before I could believe what was happening (and yes, I could see his left turn signal was on).

Salvage title? I seriously doubt it will come to that...or at least I am blindly optimistic that the damage is nowhere near that bad. I do not think I am 100% in touch with reality at the moment. My reaction to all of this thus far has been far different than I would have expected...far less emotional that one would expect for someone who is so attached and attentive to his dream car.

While I was waiting for AAA to send a flatbed, a guy from Autobahn Coach Works in Torrance approached me to recommend his services...saying they work with aluminum and have repaired NSXs before. Has anyone heard of them?

I don't mind going a little farther if my insurance company will approve of it. I will spend a good chunk of time this weekend researching my options.

I'll post another angle of the damage as soon as the photo has uploaded.

Sorry to hear about the accident. this little sideswipe below was 12k woth of damage. I went widebody. But that was 4 years ago and parts are probably cheaper now. Good luck to you.

my statment was more positve than negative "looks good". "do you want to sell". again positive shows interest in buying not a put down. as far as my penise goes at least i use it instead of driving all the time.
