Do I have Short Gears???

Bought my 92 a month or so ago and have been doing some reading on the short gears. Here's my question. I wasn't able to get ahold of the service records from the original owner but the dealer I bought the car from told me that the car had short gears. It only has 9k miles. Anyway, from my research on this site, I see that when you shift the car from 1st to 2nd the RPM's should drop to about 4500 or so. Mine drops to around 5050. When I shift from 2nd to 3rd I drop to about 5700. This leads me to believe I must have short gears but the mph's don't match up for the 2nd to 3rd shift. I am at around 79-80 mph indicated when I go into 3rd, which I believe is around stock? Any insite would be great.

Thanks,
Paul

It is too easy to get an error when trying to read the RPM while accelerating at a high rate. Drive the car at a fixed speed in 1st gear, say 35 mph and read the RPM and then read the RPM at the same speed in second gear. Take the ratio of the two RPMs and compare them to the short vs. stock 2nd/1st gear ratios.

Um OEM rev limiter 3rd gear... 118mph.

That's all I remember before installing 6 speed in my 93.

6 speed gearbox (same ratio's as short gears in 3rd gear) limiter in 3rd is 97ish.. I dont recall.

hope that helps.

Brent Cobb would know the answer to this one...
