Difference between '91 and '94 ECU?

I'm thinking of picking up a '94 ECU and installing a Dali chip, and keeping the original '91 ECU stock. My question is can a '94 ECU be used in a '91?

Why can't you just use the Dali chip with the '91 ECU?

Once you install the ZIF socket in the ECU it is a simple operation to swap out between the std. & Dali chips - save yourself the money!

Thanks, D'Ecosse - now I understand why Russ was asking. He probably can get a deal on a '94 ECU and wants to keep the original stock so he can change back to it at some point in time.

Russ, what D'Ecosse said is correct. There's no need to get the separate ECU.

Understood. However, it's not a matter of needing the ability to revert to the original chip, it's a matter of wanting to keep my original ECU unmolested. That's why I was wondering whether the '94 ECU would work in a '91.

This is almost the same reason I wanted a second ECU as well. I live in Hawaii so shipping the original ECU would mean I would be out of a car for that duration. I know it wont be that long, but I've learned that shipping things to and from Hawaii is often a circus and I want a spare to put in my car while the original ECU is away being worked on. I have seen some 91 ECUs at various salavge yards going for about $300. So, I'm guessing you guys are saying that 91-94, as well as 95-96 ECUs can work within cars of those years right? OR is it just 91-94 ECUs. Thanks.

91-94 is compatible. I have a 94 in a 92.

If you need to avoid shipping the ECU back and forth, any decent electronics shop should be able to sodder the ZIF outlet into your ECU for you.
