Clarion Builds - 1991 Acura NSX - Full Build Thread

I would be interested to see the car in better lighting, looks like that paint is hard to capture in that light. Position of the start button is a little odd, but interesting. Not a fan of the subwoofer at all. With all the changes, seems like there was very little of the original car left.

While the quality looks solid and lots of effort put in the refresh...Did anyone see anything new or interesting in this build? Seems many of us have done all this in our own builds all ready. I was really hoping they would throw out some new ideas.

I did notice the back center speaker area looks like they put the amp or some audio equipment there instead? Would have been cooler to do a S2K retrofit in that area for more pop.

The start button is the only thing that jumped out to me. With electronic stuff though, there may be a lot of subtle elements that are going on with the wiring that isn't readily apparent. Otherwise, does look pretty text book NSX update.

Yea that is a funny place for it. Surprised they didn't do a fully keyless setup. I would love to hear from Clarion on what you mentioned about all the hidden stuff or the little details. Either way looks good and they timed their build well with all the NSX coverage lately and got some good hits on Jalopnik and other websites.

Still trying to figure out the rear wheel/tire size on this.

I knew you'd be involved in this! Will you be able to "borrow" the car and take it out to maybe the PV C&C?

BTW: Can anybody help give some comments on the fitment of those Michelin Cup 2 tires over the DF fenders? really interested in that setup!

Is she single?

Haha, she kind of looks a bit like Jordana Brewster, who we all know drove an NSX in the Fast&Furious movie :)

I'll have to ask when they will be able to take it out to the various car meets!

I'm fairly disappointed in this 'build'.

Not with the results, but with the lack of updates. This car has obviously gone through a lot, and is now completed and has been presented to the public. The last video we got was a paint/body short clip on youtube and it didn't show much detail.
This thread has been largely forgotton about. Not really anything close to what I'd call a "full build thread" at this stage.

I am hoping they will release the videos here soon of the rest of the build. The paint and bodywork alone I would watch for longer episodes.

Cambo, this car has nothing on your restoration build.

High praise! Thanks so much. :)

I am not so much knocking their car though, more the lack of detailed updates.
Yes I agree. The car looks beautiful and remodeled, like all nsx's should be. But the only pics I really ever see for it hit Instagram first. They started this build thread really well. Then like flipping a switch, it was done. Kinda makes you wonder if this is even the same car.

Quick Q: what makes this roller type dyno better than say hub mounted dynapack?

I believe the main advantage of this type of dyno is that it can handle higher amounts of horsepower, but @dynomike at AutoWave would be a much better source for the info.

Still trying to figure out the rear wheel/tire size on this.

Sorry for the delay in responding, between the build and getting it ready for its unveiling, we've been slammed.

Front wheels are 18"x9" +45mm offset, Front tires are 225/40zr18 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2
Rear wheels are 19"x9" +33mm offset, Rear tires are 265/30zr19 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2

Right now, we still need to track test it to ensure this sizing doesn't trip up the traction control system, so we maybe changing the tires as we actually start driving the car.

Its been a while, but here we go. The last time we posted, the NSX was headed to Diamond Hills in Walnut, CA to get the works. We stripped it down to the bare monocoque and spent countless hours properly prepping the car for paint. The upgrades we made to the exterior of the car include a ton of parts from our Clarion Builds partner Downforce. We painted the car Blu Caleum Metallic (Lamborghini Huracan Blue) using a two-stage Glasurit paint system from BASF.

Aero-upgrades include:
  • Downforce front bumper lip spoiler
  • Downforce carbon fiber NSX-R style hood
  • Downforce front OEM style 2" wider fenders
  • US marker lights delete from front fenders
  • Downforce rear bumper fiberglass diffuser
  • Downforce carbon fiber rear NSX-R style spoiler

Pictures to come next.

@Clarion,
Make the nsx community a double din head unit which is 1 inch recessed or has a decent reverse tilt. I will buy one immediately as I am quite sure you will find out just how bad glare is in our nsx. Even with 5% tint and windows up it still glares some. Other than that, lets see the build progress.
The guys at EuroBoutique make a pretty sweet center console trim with a recess for a double din radio that significantly reduces glare...

Also, if you guys need any SCW NSX GT products we manufacture, happy to pitch in for this build!

We might take you up on that! I'll reach out to you guys this week to see what we can do.

The downforce fenders are 2" wider? that's 50 mm. I think you have your numbers wrong. It might be closer to 10-15mm. Unless you have something I don't know about but it looks like the stadard fender. Who picked this tire sizing if I may ask. This sounds like a lot of info is coming from right here on prime.

When new, the NSX was a technological masterpiece, though with 25 years having passed since this car was new, we thought it would be a great idea to seriously update the electronics in this car. Clarion outfitted the NSX with its new Full Digital Sound (FDS) audio system featuring the new 7” NX706 touchscreen source unit. The audio system within the car is the only one of its kind capable of faithfully reproducing high-resolution digital audio without ever converting it to an analog signal, delivering precise high-performance sound of the highest quality. The system is composed of a Z3 FDS processor and pair of digital tweeters, two Z7 full-range speakers and a Z25W 10” digital subwoofer. The car was also equipped with Clarion’s four-camera SurroundEye panoramic vision system, allowing the driver to see exactly what’s around the vehicle while driving. We utilized a JDM style navigation pod to house the LCD screen for the surround eye system. Additionally, Escort hooked the car up with an integrated radar and laser detection system. Viper hooked us up with a state-of-the-art app-based security system with remote start.

Pictures from the install coming next.

I agree, I am running 25mm overstock size fenders and my wheel is 9.5 width with a much more aggressive offset, 50mm would require different wheel offset to sit the way it looks on the pictures posted.

With an HD backup camera input option of VGA or HDMI instead of composite video for us Gaugeart guys.....!!!

I hope that last pic was a test fit. Someone forgot to put the panels in otherwise.....LOL.

I will be a man and eat some crow here as to my previous posts on this car. They did quite well. Some things I would have done or not done. But all in all, a beautiful restoration.

You guys are right, sorry to throw you off on that. its not 2" its 0.25 inches wider than OE. I just confirmed with DF who supplied them.

Yes, just a test fit. The panels were removed and sent to Leatherseats.com to have them wrapped in new leather.

I like it, my favorite part is the interior - I really like the modified door panels and color of seats.
