I was just wondering whether you can take the components that make up the HID lighting on the '02 NSX, the bulbs and ballasts etc, and retrofit it on a old pop up NSX headlight? Would u think it would be simple? Or would I be better off getting an aftermarket setup? Thanks in advance.

I looked into this. The bulb clip on the two housings are completely different. The old housing uses a unique spring clip, and the new housing uses a pretty standard clip that you see on the H3 bulbs. The bulb base on the new lights would need to be modified in order to make it work on the old housing. In addition, I believe the price for the hardware (bulbs, ballasts, ignighters, etc.) was pretty lofty ($1400?)

My question is exactly the opposite, as a big fan of the pop-up lights and how they look, does anyone know if you could take a 2002 and throw the old pop-up light set-up onto the new car? My guess would be no, but just thought I would ask...Thanks

On a related topic, I just read some old posts about installing the 1991-2001 JDM HID setup in US NSXs of the same vintage (those with pop-up headlights.)

The problem with installing the Japan-only HID lights in a US car is that the beam pattern is unsuitable for US (left-hand drive) traffic.

Questions:

What determines the beam pattern?

Why can't the Japanese HID bulbs be used (with the necessary electrical modifications) in the US-spec housing, thereby yielding the correct beam pattern for US traffic?

The 02 lights require significant modification including the new hood, cutting the aluminum headlight housing to fit the new lights, new wiring, etc. Not a project for the timid.

I believe the bulb bases on the JDM HID and US cars are different. The question is, why? The wiring will not be plug and play, and the cost would be beyond the two kits available currently for US cars.

After seeing the installation and light output of the two, I still recommend the RM kit over the othe aftermarket kit, despite the large difference in price.

No reason other than a general preference for Honda-engineered, OEM systems over aftermarket, if the Honda system is an option.

yes ryry210, the autolamps-online.com kit is the only way to go here. For the money and a proven reliable HID kit that was custom designed for the NSX by me with the help of autolamps-online.com. You can see the install article with pics in the faq section under DIY section.

Chris why mention the RM kit when it is not plug and play and requires much more modification and is twice the money of the autolamps kit? Just curious and hope all is well.

PS: the autolamps kit is
BEAM PATTERN CORRECT

Simply because I prefer the lighting output of the RM kit. Installation isn't that bad, but I agree with you on the points of $$$ and easy of installation with the Autolamps kit.

Is there a way to install the autolamps kit to maintain an OEM appearance under the hood, specifically, without the ballast showing?
