my family and i attended the body world 2 exhibit in san jose over the holidays and highly recommend it if you're interested in the understanding and seeing up close and in great detail how the human body is built and functions.

more information about bw at:

my understanding is there is another, similar exhibition making the rounds but rather than the exhibits - which are called "plastinates" - being voluntarily donated specimens (by the humans used in the exhibits, themselves), many of them are the bodies of executed prisoners and derelicts who were sold to the company for use in their commercial show.

Took my 5, 6, and 9 year old to Body Worlds 3 at the incredible St. Louis Science Center. I prepped the kids by watching the online video posted on the Science Center site to gauge their reaction before I went. The one here has a little controversy as they have babies at every stage of development from weeks to full term.

The kids were not scared at as everything is so artfully done and the muscles look so life like. The full size Camel and baby Camel was incredible too. I was also able to show the kids why they can't have bacon every day and why can never smoke!

My only complaints were it was very expensive (even with AAA discounts), the exhibit was pretty small, and there was no interactivity for the kids (well there was a tiny bit but everything else was museum type hands off).

My favorite part was in the gift shop after the exhibit they had a flat panel playing a DVD they were selling showing exactly how the plasticizing process was pioneered in the 70's and what they do to prepare each specimen. Absolutely fascinating!!!

Overall awesome for adults or older/non-fidgety kids but definitely not scary if you do decide to bring them. Luckily, we have a world class science center and could "play" for a couple hours afterwards.
