Blew my Timing Belt at Full Throttle!

I purchased one for the new engine build. Strength and durability ratings are a lot higher; but the belt is almost 3 times the cost of the standard belt. Considering the time, effort and $ spent why not go with the best. The engine build will not be completed for a couple of months so I can not give any other impressions.

Nope. The timing belt increment for the 1991 to 1996 NSX is 90K miles or six years, whichever comes first, just like pbassjo said.

I recommend replacing the cooling system hoses at the same time as changing the timing belt. Rubber doesn't stay flexible forever, and this is good preventive maintenance.

We got out to check out the engine. No oil leak, a little smell of burnt oil, little brownish fibers all over the engine bay. Needless to say, there was a little 1/2 inch wide by 8 inch long of shredded timing belt remnent left on a pully.

Sorry to hear of the loss, as it occured at max load it may be difficult to know exactly how it happened, so be sure to check the balancer, pullys, etc... and anything else in the area so as to verify that the belt itself was the initial cause of the failure sequence as suspected.

I've had the Toda belt on for about two years with no issues, and I've checked it several times along the way. Given the cost of our interference engines (stock or modified), a good regularly maintained belt is cheap insurance IMO. I've replaced mine once thus far, and will do a second preventative change again next year. For those whom are running around with 15 year old cars on their original belt- I say to each's own. It is up to each individual owner to decide what level of maintenance is acceptable to them.

Hi Ken, just wondering what is a reasonable cost for replacing all the hoses. I agree it is a very good idea.
 
I'm sure a top end seizure follwed by a timing belt failure leaves a specific trail as to the sequence. Additional damage will occur if it happened from top to bottom vs bottom to top.Less scaring or evidence of failure will be at the collateral location as oppose to the point of origination. My opinion ..... tho a little scientific backing if ur willing to investigate thoroughly.

The hoses themselves cost $250-350 (less, if you only replace the big ones). I'm not sure about the labor, especially if you're doing it when replacing the water pump (which means you're already getting good access and flushing the coolant). Larry B could tell you...

Sorry to be off topic, X-Toy. I blew the timing belt on my 87 BMW 325is, cost about $2500 in 1992 to get a valve job, and a few valves replaced. This was a decent price at the time. The stealer wanted at least $5000, but wouldn't commit to a firm price. I had it towed to the dealer first. Best decision was to next tow it to an independent garage, and get a realistic price.

Later got over 200,000 miles out of the car, so the cost was amortized a bit.

In one of the tech seminars at NSXPO last year, it was declared by the visting Acura dealership owner (can't remember his name) that there is no such thing as a certified NSX technician as there is no such certification.

isn't it just the senior techs that get to work on the nsx's? i know at the dealership here there is one guy that does nsx's. may not be "nsx certified" but he's the only one that touches them at that dealership.
 
There may not be an "NSX certification" but there are training programs for working on the NSX.

Most dealerships limit NSX work to one or two techs, usually the most senior ones. It's up to them, but that's generally what's done.
 
Jon Martin at Cerritos Acura is the guy to go to in socal for nsx related matters. I believe I saw the black nsx there with the timing belt issued flatbedded there today. Nice car by the way.
