SHort version of the story:

I'm following a semi-clean red pickup truck on the way home from work tonight. We're on a single lane road (speed limit 35..most people do 45-50). He is going 35 but I do not tail gate him. The road finally widens to 2 lanes and speed limit increases to 40. I drop a gear, pull into the left lane, pass this guy (and leave him) then using my turn signal get back in the right lane to turn into my subdivision (the guy is at least 100 yards behind me at this point). Because of an accident or something traffic is backed up past the entrance to my sub. So this yahoo speeds up and stops a couple inches off my rear bumper. I try to ignore him even though he won't back off at all (this is stop-and-go traffic...5 mph tops). When he doesn't get a reaction from me he pulls up and hits my NSX on purpose! That did get a reaction from me. I get out of the car and ask him to back off my bumper. He says I shouldn't have passed him back there.

I told him that I just passed him, didn't cut him off or slow him down at all. He didn't have much of an answer (as befits his obvious IQ).

What's with people??

I was willing to write this off as just another ignorant shop rat (I live north of the Metro Detroit area), until he puposely hit another vehicle (mine).

Has anyone had anything like this happen to them?

Fortunately, there was no damage, but still...

O.K. End of rant. I just had to get it off my chest. Thanks guys for listening. (Can you imagine any of us rear ending a Lamborghini just because he passed us?

I came very close...he had his window down and I had leather driving gloves on. Don't think the thought didn't cross my mind...but I thought better of it. I didn't want to lower myself to his standards (not that he probably has any).

I actually told him (after the contact) that the car was worth more than he probably earns in 3 years and he said "like I care". That told me right there that if I try to pound him there is going to be some serious damage to my car from his truck. It wasn't worth it (I wish I would have had a passenger in the car - he might have reacted differently. But then again, probably not)

Question: What will an idiot normally do?
Answer: Behave like an idiot!

I would of write down his license number and demand his license and informations. Get the car check out on his expense and if the guy is really a j@ck@ss, I'll threaten with harrassment.

Good idea, but I was a little too steamed at that point! Unfortunately, its too late now. I was really caught off guard by his actions. I had never even thought of doing that to someone else.

Here in L.A. I get guys in big ole Ford F150's doing almost the same thing to me (no disrespect to ALL pick-up owners out there; I ran into one or two that actually gave me the thumb's up
smile.gif
), except (so far) it never escalated to that point when the J@ck@ss decided to bump me off the road. It's always happens when I'm just minding my own business, trying to get the car up to legal speed limit when these guys in big ole pickups comes from behind, passes and then get in front of me and suddenly hit the brakes. Apparently they feel that they have something to prove, maybe perhaps they think that they're better than some 'rich' kids or snobby millionaire driving in his pampered exotic....sigh....
I feel sorry that this sort of things happened to you. I hope the bastard picked on a psychopath and get his pea brain shot off!!

I would have had the police on the scene as soon as possible. Jerks like this usually do not like to deal with the police. His actions show that he more than likely has a tainted past with whats right and whats wrong.

Maybe they're in awe of your NSX and would like to get a better look.

Get a plate number/description of vehicle/driver note time and place and call the police. (Keep a paper/pencil/pen in the gove box for this)
Damage or not it is vehicular assault. Let the police sort it out and decide what to do.
Anyone can have a gun, knive etc. and you KNOW he'll hit you with the car. Don't give your freedom/life up for a accident.

I was coming home from the office a few weeks ago, going the long way through the North GA mountains. It was a great ride. But, towards the end of it, I come up behind a big 4x4 pickup doing the speed limit. I followed him for a mile or so until he reached his house, which was on this road. I wasn't tailgating and I could not pass because the road was far too windy. So he slows to an absolute crawl to slowly turn into his driveway. I mean, he is going like 1 mph, and I can tell he's intentionally messing with me so that I have to almost come to a complete stop. Anyway, the driveway he's turning onto is GRAVEL and as soon as I begin to pass him (i.e. when I get directly behind him), he guns it a spews gravel and rocks into the side of my NSX. I was fuming, but this was one of those rednecks with the guns in the rear window of his pickup.
When I got home, I inspected for damage, expecting to so lots of damage since I could hear the rocks bouncing off of my passenger door and wheels. I got lucky...somehow, there are no noticable marks. What an a**hole.

I bet he practices that manuver daily, just waiting for nice cars to be behind him.

Michigan NSX if I wasn't in an ungodly hurry I would have called the police right there on the spot. If the said he was leaving, I would casually mention that you can get in serious trouble for fleeing the scene of an accident. Anyway I'd make sure that moron never did that to anyone again if I could.

I agree. There is probably hidden damage. If he struck your rear bumper, some of the absorbing components beneath the cover may be deformed. I think there is a styrofoam piece in the rear bumper just like the front bumper. Have it checked out.

By reading this and the other "Big Thumbs down" thread I feel somehow lucky to live in the peaceful Switzerland were you do not even need to know your neighbors and nobody cares about you or your possession

From what I've seen and given your exports (including Einstein) it looks like a wonderful place to visit but for all our faults, I'll stick to the good ole USA thank you very much!

It's interesting how you can create a false impression by relating one or two incidents.

In most parts of the United States, we live a peaceful existence where the security of our families and possessions is not generally at risk. Incidents like this happen, but it is not an everyday occurrence.

Similarly, I'm sure there is crime in Switzerland. In fact, I've experienced it personally. But I do not draw a generalization that people in Switzerland are all criminals or encounter fraud and other crimes every day.

BTW, I believe Einstein was originally from Germany, not Switzerland.

All of this reminds me of the humorous line from Carol Reed's classic film, "The Third Man", in which Orson Welles, as Harry Lime, says:

"In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed - but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

If you are speaking of road rage I beg to differ.
In fact an incident like this more than likely happens once a second across the USA. I can not remember the exact amount of deaths per day from road rage. I am sure that it is more than one. I can not think of anyone I know that has not been harassed on the road at one time or another. I will also go as far to say that I myself have gotten pissed off at people that pull out in front of me and then do the speed limit or less. I think that it is very selfish for someone to hold someone else's time ransom.

Of course I did not mean to start a "my country is better than yours" thread... I like the US, I have been there several times... and I also like the people I know that come from there (in my company we have about 5% americans, about 50 people).

I was trying to convince myself (in primis) that the old boring Switzerland (rich, snob, selfish
wink.gif
) had some advantage over the very big cities with millions of inhabitants (here the biggest one, Zürich, has 400'000) where traffic, stress and other factors may lead to questionable behaviour (of course it is related to only a 0.01% of the population, that is anyway relevant on a basis of millions...).

BTW:

- Einstein is not swiss... I do not see a point there. What did you mean? (Further point Nazis were not swiss too if that is what you meant)

- I do not like the official swiss NSX-folks too, Ken
frown.gif
. Maybe you noticed it from several posts... I know, they are a$$holes.
Ask Forum Nazi to give you some help

- In Switzerland we produce fine watches (IWC? Rolex? tons of other good ones), finest chocolate, very good banks, insurances, services in general, Nestle products (Nescafe?), world known architects, pharmaceutical products (Ken, never heard of them?!), top universities, ... I think your last statement (or Reed's one) is really ridiculous, sorry Ken! I could post tons of several (untrue) jokes about the US

That line was strictly humorous; I'm sure you understand.

I have been in Switzerland (have driven the bob run in St. Moritz, in fact). I'm surprised that you neglected to mention the country's natural beauty along with its many fine products. And it's a top destination for winter sports.

As for those jokes about the U.S., they're probably true.

Here's something to try next time:

Get yourself one of those disposable cameras and keep it in the car at all times. After the incident go and take snapshots of his bumper touching yours (very important). Then take snapshots of his rear plates. Take pictures of the driver if you want to. Then PUT THE CAMERA BACK IN THE CAR before confronting him. (If you dont, he might just threaten you and steal your evidence.) Ask him for license and insurance information and then handle this like any other accident. He will likely be more cooperative since he saw you taking pictures. If he refuses, you have your evidence and you can go to the police and file a hit and run.

Even if you cannot find any visible damage immediately, you may find internal damage or problems with the seams between the bumper and body later.

The following is posted for David Allen who is running into a technical difficulty trying to post:

Almost every "road rage" incident I've had in my life is some big hairy white trash ford flatbed/SUV driving idiot. My first road rage experience was in my TT Supra - and it's ALWAYS when you pass somebody (not cut them off) politely not thinking about it. They just snap. This guy ended up following me, and running off the road to get in front of me, cut me off, get out of his car and come after me. Luckily he backed off when I revved the engine and beckoned him to come closer.

I had a concealed weapons permit a month later.

Just a week or two ago, I was in my Land Cruiser, and some guy went flying past me. When we got to a light, I got behind him since he was driving fast, when the light turned green, he drove around 10-15mph (this is highway) and then sped up and slammed his breaks on. When I went to go around him, he tried to slam into the side of my truck (not too smart, since my LC is over 5K pounds). He finally got in front of me again and cut others off (almost ran somebody else off the road).

I almost called 911 to report him (which is what you should do if somebody is acting REALLY crazy), but he took off and disappeared.

Michigan (don't know your real name
smile.gif
, if anyone EVER hits any of your vehicles and doesn't stop, it's a hit and run. Get their liense number, and call 911 immediately on your cell phone. In the end, they'll probably be thrown in jail.

People are crazy, folks - simple as that.

I'm lucky - I've had very few 'road rage' incidents with my NSX - mostly 'race rage' hehe

First priority is to protect yourself. If somebody tries to run you off the road, as I mentioned, call 911 IMMEDIATELY. They will send police, since your life IS in danger.

If we don't do anything about these people, the just continue to get away with it, and think they can do it to the next guy.

You know the saying "what goes around comes around"?

Be the guy that comes around and puts a stop to it.

Isnt detroit were they invented car jacking? First they bump you to make you pull over then they put a gun to your head and take your car. Man good thing for that trafic jam or those nice rims of yours would be on a ford escort cruzin on woodward and eight mile . Got to love that lodge freeway where else can you go 90 on a saturday night and your keeping pace with trafic

In events like these, it's always nice to have a cell phone and a camera. I would have been pissed, but I would get out of the NSX calmly, begin snapping pictures and tell him I've called the police. At that point I don't think he would have many options, if he leaves he knows you took pictures of him and his car, if he thinks about becoming angry or violent, he knows the police are on their way.

Kenric

BTW, I recently got the Minolta Dimage X Digital Camera and I always have it with me. It fits into your pants pocket and you forget its there.

If I where you I would have got all his info right then, and if he refused I would have shot out all his tires until the police chould show up. He attacked you with his vechile, you could claim self defence.
Just try and hang out in the area, time, and day where you last saw him and wait for him, follow him home. And when you have time make him really sorry he messed with you. Later pay him a little visit with your friends and get compensation, the hard way
