Aftermarket header gains for a 97+

Since 97+ NSXs technically have factory headers installed, would the gains from an aftermarket unit be minimal? If anyone can speak from experience regarding this matter I would greatly appreciate it.

It's hard to say, going from the stock headers to comptech
headers actually made my car lose some low end torque and
the car only gained a couple of HP at high RPM's.

These results were based on using a RM Racing exhaust with
stock headers vs comptech headers, dyno tested and also as
a result of a seats of the pants feeling.

I finally regained the lost low end torque when I switched to
a comptech exhaust. (The RM Racing exhaust had a lot less
back pressure when compared to the Comptech one)

BTW: my NSX is a 97

Just my 2cents.

The dyno chart is actually quoting 13 hp increase @7800 RPM with just an exhaust. Not that I don't trust Comptech, but that's not in line with any other dyno chart I have ever seen

Funny......I thought I was the only one who thought that was strange:confused:

Not that I have a vested interest, I have researched this enough to give you a few pointers. Please review the chart carefully. It all depends how you want to read the chart.

The 13HP you quote is correct at 7800RPM. How often do you drive at 7800 RPM? Yes I know .... <vbg> And when you floor it or go through the gears where do you really start with your RPMs?

Most of us drive most of the time in the range of 3000 RPM in a 3.2L 6 speed. Up to 5400 RPM or VTEC range the exhaust does NOT offer any improvement, and it is only after 6600 RPM that it starts showing any signifcant gains. Therefore up to about 6600 RPM the exhaust your are getting some sound with no real or significant HP improvement to speak of. In fact at lower RPMs, the exhaust alone takes away some of the torque compared to the OEM. It's a balancing act with an exhaust alone. At low RPMs you get marginal sound at the expense of loss in low end torque (and this is true with most aftermarket exhausts on a 3.2L), and great sound with some gains above 6600 RPMs.

BUT, when you add both the exhaust and the header, you get great sound AND HP AND torque across the ENTIRE spectrum.

HTH

98-T and for now still stock Headers/Exhaust

And did I mention that Comptech is a major sponsor of NSXPO 2003? :D
