AC noises

my air conditioner compressor has been making some gawd awful noises for the last 2 years, but since i live in a relatively mild climate, i haven't used it much.
the acura dealer pointed it out to me and said he thought it was the compressor that needed to be replaced sooner than later. i bought a used one from a 97 a few weeks later and it has been sitting on my shelf ever since.
i noticed that the part number of the 97 compressor is different than the 91. are they completely different units that are NOT compatible? or just a newer model that got a new product id?

i guess this could have been a one sentence thread...

...will a 1997 compressor work on a 1991?

sorry for the blab. ;^)

1991 NSX's have R-12 refrigerant.
1993+ NSX's have R-134A refrigerant.

Different compressors. I'm sure there is some way to adapt the system... there are R-134 conversion kits... so I don't see how this could be a huge problem.

i had the ac updated to the R134 system. this is when the dealer pointed out the noise. do they have to modify the compressor for the system upgrade?
maybe this is how the compressor was damaged? i never heard the problem until after the dealer performed the upgrade. he actually pointed it out to me and i definitely would have noticed that sound if it had occured before.
