? about timing and rough idle.

If the compression dropped due to incorrect timing, wouldn't that imply the valves are not seated properly? Would that cause burn valves also?

Thanks for the info regard engine vacuum.

Just picked up the car from Cerritos Acura.

The car definitley idles smoother now than it did before. The motor also seems a lot more responsive, esp. in the lower rev. ranges.

Did you find the cause of the rough idle?

Not seating properly can indeed contribute to burned valves, but the cam timing being off won't impact how a valve seats, just when it seats. Retarded spark timing will burn valves--the mixture fires later, and is still burning as it exits the chamber.

Yes, I'm afraid that I'm not very technical but as I understand the problem the first shop that did all of my work last year didn't correctly adjust the timing belt such that the rear cam timing was off a tooth. I might be mis stating that, but I'm told it's a little tricky to do right if you don't have experience doing the timing belt on an NSX and even John Martin told me that twice in the past he's thought he had it right only to restart the car and have to pull things back apart again to get it right.

I kind of feel that I got hosed on this one because the original work done at the other shop wasn't correct but c'est la vie and live and learn.

I think it is very likely that the rear exhaust cam is retarded one tooth. I have seen it so many times. There is a specific method laid out in the service manual to get this right, you must follow it;).

BTW, You should send the bill to the previous shop.

Update

In the interests of being fair and offering complete disclosure...

I just spoke to one of the owners of the original shop. He had talked with John Martin about an unrelated item while my car was being fixed so he was aware of the issue. He was extremely apologetic and cool. His initial response was that he would have preferred me to bring the car back to him to offer the chance to have the timing fixed. I explained to him that this wasn't practical given that I had already incurred 90% of the costs just diagnosing the issue and to not fix it while the car was apart was silly. He agreed.

The owner offered to compensate me by "comping" me future work equal to the amount I paid to have the timing fixed, etc. IMO, mistakes happen and that's very fair.

I hope that I've been fair to everyone involved and I know I've made a conscientious effort not to bad mouth anyone and now I'm even happier that I didn't. The truth is that mistakes do happen and good people own up to that and do what they can to make things right.

I'm just glad to have my car back and I'm glad it finally stopped raining!

Christian,

As I have come to know you, it is clear you are a straight up guy. The shop making that offer seems pretty fair to me too. Glad you have a nice running car, and you have some "service" in the bank:).

Thanks for the compliments guys. I'm far, far, far from perfect but I do try:biggrin:

Keep the shiny side up!
