Hi i have a question

the japanese and european specs for a 91-96 nsx is 274 hp and for the 97+ its 280 hp

an increase with 2,2% in power

could anyone explain to me why the "american" nsx 91-96 has 270 hp..while the new updated 97+ has 290 hp? (an increase with 7,4% in power)

are we talking about different types of hp?

if the updated american 97+ nsx has 290 hp..then the 91-96 nsx should have more than 270 hp

In 97 Honda introduced a newer, redesigned engine. The increase was largely due to increased displacement. 3.2 L instead of 3.0 liters. There were many changes made in 97. The FAQ section will have more information. Welcome aboard.

As Jimbo noted there engine changed in 1997 from a 3.0L (1991-1996) to a slightly more powerful 3.2L.

As for variations between countries...

The Euro cars are mostly rated in PS, not HP. They are very close but not exactly the same. 1 PS = 0.98632 HP

There are also different emissions requirements and different ECU settings to accomodate the variation in fuel between countries.

And, in Japan, there is an unofficial agreement not to rate any car at more than 280 ps.

Which obviously is meaningless since there are Japanese cars that are rated higher. The Infiniti Q45, is one example, being rated at 340 HP.

if its all meaningless with the 280 PS rule

why didnt Honda uppgrade the 2002 nsx to 300+ hp? they could claim its still an 280 PS car

If everyone knew that the the actual power in the nsx was 330 PS...the sales would increase a lot (its all about the PS/hp in this world)

Honda seems to be a very smart car company but this doesnt make sense

It's not rated that high in Japan.

What I mean is, it may have horsepower that high, but it's not advertised as having horsepower higher than 280 ps.

That's my understanding of how it works.

It shouldn't be. I don't think there are any differences between the powertrain in Europe and in North America...

The JDM 3.0L motor produces a little bit more hp than the US ones due to different emission standards, different fuel, and different ECU setting, there fore it is rated 276ps. When Honda upgraded to 3.2L the actual output exceeded the Japanese limit of 280hp, so in the Japanese Domestic market, the power rating is quoted 280ps, while outside of Japan, Honda quoted the actual hp of 290hp.

he stated the 3.0 and 3.2 L Euro spec didnt have much different as they do in the US version.

Apparently in Europe (e.g. Honda UK), they are merely quoting the Japan figure of 280 ps (276 hp) for the 3.2 even though the car actually makes 290 hp.
